The Biological Diversity Act of 2002 was enacted to meet India's obligations under the UN Convention on Biological Diversity. The act's objectives are to secure equitable sharing of benefits from biological resources, promote sustainable use of biodiversity, and protect local communities' knowledge. It established the National Biodiversity Authority and State Biodiversity Boards to regulate access to biological resources and support conservation. The NBA works with over 31574 local management committees. Violations of the act can result in imprisonment of at least 5 years or fines up to 10 lacs rupees.

๏ถ Introduced for the purpose of prevention of biological
diversity in India and
๏ถ Provides mechanism for equitable sharing of benefits
arising out use of traditional biological resources and
knowledge .
๏ถ This act was enacted with the purpose to meet the
obligation under the United Nations Convention
for Biological Diversity .to which India is a
signatory .
๏ถ The conventions main purpose being sustainable use
of its components and fair and equitable sharing of
benefits arising out of the utilization of genetic
resources .
๏ถ The term biological diversity can be used for
describing all the living beings /organisms on the
planet earth.

4. ๏ถNBA and SBB :
(NBA) National Biodiversity Authority
is the statutory autonomous institution
established under the ministry of
environment and forest in order to
implement and regulate this act in the
year 2003 .
(SBB)State Biodiversity Boards have
been created at 28 states all across India ,
there are more than 31574 management
committees for each local body .

6. ๏ Penalties :
Any person violates the provisions of the
act shall be punished
1.With an imprisonment for not less
than 5 yrs . Or
2.With an fine or penalty amounting
up to rupees 10lacs.
