FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER (Cantate)Isaiah 12:1–6James 1:16–21John 16:5–15Jesus Promises to Send His Holy Spirit, the HelperThough Jesus has departed from us visibly to the right hand of the Father who sent Him,yet this is to our advantage. For Jesus—who is Lord over all creation, who intercedes forus before the Father, who is preparing a place for us in heaven—has sent the Helper, theSpirit of Truth (John 16:5–15). ―Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights‖ through Jesus Christ (James 1:17). The Holy Spirithelps us by taking what is Christ‘s and declaring it to us. In the Word of truth, the Spiritworks repentance and delivers to us the forgiveness of sins, the righteousness of Christ, and victory over the devil. For the ruler of this world is judged and defeated by the cross.Through the ministry of the Holy Spirit, we have been brought forth to new life in Himwho is the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. Confident of our resurrection withChrist we confess, ―Behold, God is my salvation; I will trust, and will not be afraid‖ (Is.12:2).
Sixth S. of Easter (Rogate):The Father Answers OurPrayers Because of Jesus Num. 21:4-9 The BronzeSerpent 1 Tim. 2:1-6 Pray for AllPeople or James 1:22-27 John 16:23-30 (31-33) I HaveOvercome the World Psalm 107:1-9 Let theRedeemed of the LORD Say So
Num. 21:4-9; 1 Tim. 2:1-6; James 1:22-27;John 16:23-33; Psalm 107:1-9Numbers 21:4-9The Bronze Serpent4 From Mount Hor they set out by the way to theRed Sea, to go around the land of Edom. And thepeople became impatient on the way. 5 And thepeoplespoke against God and againstMoses,―Why have you brought us up out ofEgypt to die in the wilderness? For there is nofood and no water, and we loathe this worthlessfood.‖ 6 Then theLORD sent fiery serpentsamong the people, and they bit the people, so thatmany people of Israel died. 7 And the peoplecame to Moses and said, ―We have sinned, for wehave spoken against the LORD and against you.Pray to the LORD, that he take away the serpentsfrom us.‖ So Moses prayed for the people. 8 Andthe LORD said to Moses, ―Make a fiery serpentand set it on a pole, and everyone who is bitten, when he sees it, shall live.‖ 9 So Moses made abronze serpent and set it on a pole. And if aserpent bit anyone, he would look at the bronzeserpent and live.1 Timothy 2:1-6Pray for All People2 First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings bemade for all people, 2 for kings and all who arein high positions, that we may lead a peacefuland quiet life, godly anddignified in every way. 3This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of Godour Savior, 4 who desires all people to be savedand to come to the knowledge of the truth. 5 Forthere is one God, and there is one mediatorbetween God and men, the man Christ Jesus, 6who gave himself as a ransom for all, which isthe testimony given at the proper time.James 1:22-2722 But be doers of the word, and not hearersonly, deceiving yourselves.23 For if anyone is ahearer of the word and not a doer, he is like aman who looks intently at his natural face in amirror. 24 For he looks at himself and goes awayand at once forgets what he was like. 25 But theone who looks into the perfect law, the law ofliberty, and perseveres, being no hearer whoforgets but a doer who acts, he will be blessed inhis doing.26 If anyone thinks he is religious and does notbridle his tongue but deceives his heart, thispersons religion is worthless. 27 Religion that ispure and undefiled before God, the Father, is this:to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneselfunstained from the world.John 16:23-3323 In that day you will ask nothing of me. Truly, truly, I say to you, whatever you ask of the Fatherin my name, he will give it to you. 24 Until nowyou have asked nothing in my name. Ask, andyou will receive, that your joy may be full.I Have Overcome the World25 ―I have said these things to you in figures ofspeech. The hour is coming when I will no longerspeak to you in figures of speech but will tell youplainly about the Father. 26 In that day you willask in my name, and I do not say to you that Iwill ask the Father on your behalf; 27 for theFather himself loves you, because you have lovedme and have believed that I came from God. 28 Icame from the Father and have come into theworld, and now I am leaving the world and goingto the Father.‖29 His disciples said, ―Ah, now you are speakingplainly and not using figurative speech! 30 Nowwe know thatyou know all things and do not needanyone to question you; this is why we believethat you came from God.‖31 Jesus answeredthem, ―Do you now believe? 32 Behold, the houris coming, indeed it has come, when you will bescattered, each to his own home, andwill leaveme alone. Yet I am not alone, for the Father iswith me. 33 I have said these things to you, thatin me you may have peace. In the world you willhavetribulation. But take heart; I have overcomethe world.‖Psalm 107:1-9Book FiveLet the Redeemed of the LORD Say So107 Oh give thanks to the LORD, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever!2 Let the redeemed of the LORD say so,whom he has redeemed from trouble3 and gathered in from the lands, from the east and from the west, from the north and from the south.4 Some wandered in desert wastes, finding no way to a city to dwell in;5 hungry and thirsty, their soul fainted within them.6 Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress.7 He led them by a straight waytill they reached a city to dwell in.8 Let them thank the LORD for his steadfastlove, for his wondrous works to the children of man!9 For he satisfies the longing soul, and the hungry soul he fills with good things.
