7. How Power Corrupts Leaders
Why and how does power corrupt leaders?
Published on August 8, 2009 by Ronald E. Riggio, Ph.D. in Cutting-Edge Leadership
“Absolute power corrupts absolutely”
Leadership is at its core all about power and influence.
Simple distinction of power:
Socialized Power: Using power to benefit others
Personalized Power: Using power for personal gains
They are not mutually exclusive. The obvious
problem is when personalized power
dominates and the leader gains, often at the
followers' (TARGET‟S) expense.
8. Terry Price- Exception Making
Power Intoxication
"for other people, this would be wrong, but
because I have the best interests of my followers
at heart, it's ok for me to...."
"the President is above the law.“
followers are willing to collude and make such
exceptions "It's ok because he/she is the leader“
Some have suggested that President Clinton's
engaged in a sexual dalliance with intern Monica
Lewinsky simply because "he could."
9. Power has advantages and disadvantages
for leaders.
On the positive side, power makes leaders more
assertive and confident and certain of their
decisions. This enables them to move forward on
chosen courses of action. Leaders must use power
to "get the job done."
10. On the negative side…………
• I thought I was above the law but I learned the hard
way………………….I‟m so sorry.
11. Tiger Woods Sex Scandal: Why Powerful
Men Can't Resist Temptation
By JUJU CHANG (@JujuChangABC) and SARAH NETTER
Dec. 3, 2009
Sex anthropologist Helen Fisher- it's no coincidence that
powerful men get caught in headline-grabbing scandals.
"The opposite sex is very attracted to someone who is
powerful, particularly women are attracted to men
who are powerful."
-In a 2008 interview with ABC News' Bob Woodruff,
John Edwards spoke of how his quick rise to power
led him to cheat on wife Elizabeth, even after she had
been diagnosed with terminal cancer.
NBA star Kobe Bryant, who had wife Vanessa by his
side during his sexual assault scandal in 2003, later
lavished her with gifts to apologize -- including a $4
12. And then there are individual differences. Some
people are simply power hungry and prone to use
their power to subjugate others
Subjugate- To bring under complete control; to
make submissive or to enslave.
