The people of Cahokia based their diet largely on corn. Grinding corn with stone tools damaged peoples' teeth. Cutting down trees to plant more corn reduced habitat for animals. A corn-only diet lacked protein and vitamins. Drought or flood could destroy corn crops. While hunter-gatherers adopted agriculture to stay in one place and have more reliable food sources, over-reliance on corn may have contributed to the decline of the Cahokia people when environmental disasters struck their crops.
