Some believe that this is the day that Jesus was conceived/born This is Jewish new year for man, animals and all civil contracts. The Jewish festival centers around the binding of Isaac by Abraham, God’s right in justice to request the first born. His compassion to provide a substitutiary sacrifice. Sukkot- Begins with the Feast of Trumpets Lev 23:24 Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, In the seventh month, in the first day of the month, shall ye have a Sabbath, a memorial of blowing of trumpets, an holy convocation. Blowing of Trumpets Biblical Significance- To announce the King. God is the King of the Universe and a just King administers justice to his subjects- God has right to judge the world. Blowing of the Trumpets a call to repentance in preparation for the day of Judgment (for God’s people the Day of Atonement) The loud noise declared in scripture (psalm 47) is a proclamation to awaken the spirit to God’s sovereignty and coming judgment.
11. Sukkot- The day of Atonement Lev 23:27 Also on the tenth day of this seventh month there shall be a day of atonement: it shall be an holy convocation unto you; and ye shall afflict your souls, and offer an offering made by fire unto the LORD. For Israel this was the day the High priest went into the Holy of Holies to sprinkle the Mercy seat with blood sacrifice for all of Israel’s sin. This was a day that called for each member of Israel to afflict their Soul
12. Sukkot- To Dwell in Tabernacles Lev 23:34 Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, The fifteenth day of this seventh month shall be the feast of tabernacles for seven days unto the LORD. Feast of Trumpets & Baptism Blowing of the shofar was to announce God’s Kingship and warn of the future day of Judgment (Atonement) Israel would examine themselves of the sins they had committed against God and against one another and repent and look for reconciliation Tradition held prior to Christ was to either write the sin’s down or identify their number in crumbs of bread, Go to the river and based on prophecy Mic 7:19 “He will turn again, he will have compassion upon us; he will subdue our iniquities; and thou wilt cast all their sins into the depths of the sea.” They would believe that the sin offering made by the High priest was a propitiation for them. A stand in that would satisfy God’s justice They would begin the new year, anticipating the growth in their relationship with God and an increase in merits. The proclamation of the Gospel by John and Jesus… Does it sound familiar? Mat 3:1 In those days came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judaea, Mat 3:2 And saying, Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. After Jesus? Act 2:38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. No longer just your sin’s, but all of you is put in the water… why? Not just the sin that is gone, the old man is gone! An act of believing in the one and only propitiation for sin. The new birth, brought forth by the Holy Spirit, not a new year but a new life under the wings of a Faithful and compassionate God. We trust him to grow us up into the very nature of Christ.
