family.
Her father Govind Chander Dutt and mother both
had literary touch.
Trail , easily broken and very much sensitive..
Early death of her brother Abju and sister Aru
made her life painful.
Death : 1877.
4. Her style of writing
She is a romantic poet.
She wrote Lyrics , odes, and sonnets.
She translated Sanskrit verses and created
her poems as well.
‘The Ramayana’,’The Mahabharata’ and
other classical themes came in her work because
of reading.
In her poem there are moral tone but it is
saved by her lyrical output.

Myths are the description of Historical events in an
idealized manner.
‘Myth’ = ‘Imagination’ of poet.
Mixture of past and present illusion.
Connected to historical background of human life.
Based on God and Goddesses.
Supernatural elements.
People’s blind believe without any logic.

Laxman by Toru dutt is based on Great Indian
myth and Epic „The Ramayana‟.
Laxman is a historical character.
He known for his brotherly love ,faith and
bravery.
Harihar Das remarks, "Nowhere we
think, outside Indian thought, could be get so
perfect a picture of brotherly loyalty."
In „The Ramayana‟ he obey his brother but in
Toru Dutt‟s poem Laxman is disregarded and
disobedience character as per Sita‟s view.
“ Hark Lakshman! Hark, again that cry?
It is – it is my husband‟s voice…….”

Her first poem is 'Savitri'. It narrates the fortune of
the princess Savitri and her courageous
conversation with the God of Death – The Yama.
It depicts the constancy of the heroine, her
chastity, womanly modesty, humility and her
great love for her husband Satyavan.
Her actions are considered as "the highest standard
of deep love even today." Through the story, she
also discloses the pitiable plight of the widows of
her time.
She writes :
“And think upon the dreadful curse
Of widowhood; the vigils, fasts
And penances; no life is worse
Than hopeless life—the while it lasts.”
