2. OPENING CREDITS. The opening credits start with a close up shot of the 02 arena which is a famous London land mark, it then zooms out to show the rest of London. As the camera zooms out over London we are left with an establishing shot of London showing the River Thames then the soap name Eastenders comes onto the screen. From this we are informed that the soap is based in East London.
3. FIRST SCENE. The establishing shot shows the bottom of the stairs of an untidy house. The first thing we notice is a football, a children's bag and some pens. This informs us that there are children living in the house. The camera then pans up the stairs to a woman who is doing her dressing gown up, she is clearly upset and says to then man who is leaving “A goodbye would have been nice”. This suggests to us that they had a one night stand.
4. FIRST SCENE. We also think she has the role of looking after the children that live in the house, she could be a mother. The house looks old fashioned and seems like the woman who owns it must not have a lot of money. The mise en scene of this scene is reiterated through the way the shot shows the old fashioned wallpaper and picture. The man also looks guilty as he leaves which may be because he realises he has upset the woman.
5. SECOND SCENE. We see a woman who looks very glamorous at first glance. She looks like she is about 40 years old. Her hair and makeup is all very neatly done and she is wearing costume jewellery. Her appearance gives off the impression she looks after herself. But then when we look closer at the mise en scene of the cafe she is in it is clear she might not be as well off or glamorous as we thought. This is shown through the fact she is in a “greasy cafe” with builders sat around her.
6. SECOND SCENE. This scene shows a business man as he is in an office and wearing a suit but the mise en scene tells us it might not be a very good business as its a very messy, not very professional office. The way the light in the room is very dark, gives us the impression he is a villain. This scene shows the woman as still looking glamorous but we see now that she is distressed. We get the impression that it is the person on the phone that is making her feel this way.
7. SECOND SCENE. This shot is taken through furniture. It is blurry of the furniture but a clear, close up image of the character it is focusing on as it frames his face showing us his expressions. This shot type is done to make the audience feel they are part of the scene. This shot shows how male characters e.g. The builders view this female character based on her appearance (and possible what they heard about her on the phone call she just had). It shows how stereotypes are formed in soap operas through mise en scene.
