2. • “Syphilis is a serious but curable infection caused by
bacteria called Treponema pallidum. Bacteria are
simple microscopic organisms that are the oldest form
of life on Earth. They are highly adaptable and can
live anywhere—at the bottom of the ocean, in frigid
Arctic ice, and in steamy hot springs, as well as in
any kind of plant or animal species. The wormlike
bacterium that causes syphilis, for example, likes to
burrow into the moist mucous membranes of human
beings’ mouths or genital areas” (Winters)
3. Symptoms
• “In sexually transmitted form, painless skin lesion
(chancre), malaise, headache, fever, joint aches, rash,
sores in mouth and throat, and soft tumors in eyes,
lungs, bone, or brain if untreated; in congenital form,
stillbirth, blindness, physical abnormalities” (Adler)
4. How do YOU prevent it?
You can prevent your self from getting SYPHILIS by:
• Not having sex with an infected person
• Wearing a condom if you have sex with an infected
person.
• Taking all the precautions you can like going to the
Doctor to get a check up every three months or so to
know if you have STD
5. How do you treat it?
• Antibiotics like penicillin; also erythromycin,
tetracyclines, chloramphenicol (Adler)
6. How Do You Get It?
• “Syphilis can be transmitted either through oral,
genital, or anal sex. Even partners who don’t engage
in actual sexual penetration—of a penis into a
vagina, for example—can still get syphilis.”
(Winters)
• “Syphilis is spread when one person’s infected area,
usually an open sore, touches the soft skin of the
mucous membrane found inside or around another
person’s genital or anal areas, or in or around the
mouth” (Winters)
7. Journal
• What I know about my assigned STD is nothing, I
have never heard about it. But I’m hoping on
learning much more on it. What I know about about
STDs in general is that STDs are bad and some of
them can cause you to die. I wouldn’t like to get any
type of STD in the future because I don’t want to be
going to the Doctor every day and taking medicine
every day.
