1. Greenhouse Design: Style, Ventilation, and Coverings
There are probably hundreds of greenhouse designs out there and a greenhouse shopper may get overwhelmed from picking out the one that would suit
his or her needs. There are a few things to know regarding greenhouse design that should help you find the right solution for your greenhouse needs.
Greenhouse Design: Style
The style in your greenhouse design can help you plan the appearance of your greenhouse. Here are some of the most common greenhouse design
styles:
1-The A-Frame Greenhouse Design:
Easy to construct and a good choice for people who grow hanging plants. This simple greenhouse design has a triangular shape that can have a short
vertical base if preferred.
2-Barn Style Greenhouse Design:
The perfect greenhouse for growing plants in beds. The main difference, and what makes this greenhouse design distinct, is that instead of having
vertical walls, the walls are slanted in an angle. There are, however, barn style greenhouses that have vertical walls.
3-Arched Roof Greenhouse Design:
Also known as the hoop greenhouse design or Gothic arch greenhouse design. The hoop design is more common and easier to build. It looks like a
tunnel. The other one looks like a raised dome.
4-Lean-To Greenhouse Design:
This greenhouse is attached to one side of your house, therefore making it closer to water and electrical outlets that is needed. A lean-to greenhouse will
be great for a home with a small land area.
Greenhouse Design: Ventilation Systems.
Ventilation is very, very important to include in your greenhouse design. Make sure your greenhouse will be properly ventilated, as well as insulated.
Heat is essential for growing plants, but too much heat may cause damage to them. Control the temperature by installing a vent system in good areas of
your greenhouse and make sure you indicate a space for them in your greenhouse design plan.
Greenhouse Design: Covering Materials.
There are generally two types of coverings you can use on your wood or metal greenhouse frame and those are glass and plastic. Plastic can either
be polycarbonate, acrylic or fiberglass sheeting. Another kind of plastic is a plastic film made from polyethene, ethyl vinyl acetate (EVA), or poly vinyl
chloride (PVC). Each of these covering materials have there own pros and cons. Try reading about each of these materials to decide which kind of
material you would want when building your greenhouse.
Build your greenhouse as large as possible to accommodate not only your plants but your gardening equipment, tools and supplies as well, so as not to
build an extra structure just for the purpose of storage. If you are a greenhouse gardener, planning for a big greenhouse design is necessary because for
sure your greenhouse will be full in no time. There are other accessories and gadgets you can add to your greenhouse like extra racks, solar panels and
hooks. So, do not forget to include these in your greenhouse design plans.
