  • 1. IMAGES OF THE KIPLING GARDEN! gary marlowe IMAGES OUT OF THE ORDINARY JULY 2011
  • 2. IMAGES OUT OF THE ORDINARYABOUT THE GARDENI FIRST CAME ACROSS HEATHER APPLETON AT THE 2011 CHELSEA FLOWER SHOW WHERE SHE DESIGNED ABEAUTIFUL GARDEN FOR CHILSTONE. WITH ITS SUPERB PLANTING AND TURQUOISE CARPET IT WAS GREATTO PHOTOGRAPH. SO WHEN I LEARNT SHE ALSO HAD A GARDEN AT THE HAMPTON COURT PALACE FLOWERSHOW, I HAD TO CHECK IT OUT. FORTUNATELY, WHEN I WAS THERE, HEATHER WAS AT THE GARDEN AND SHETOOK THE TIME TO EXPLAIN HER THINKING BEHIND THE DESIGN. HERS WAS ONE OF A GROUP OF SMALLGARDENS INSPIRED BY BRITISH POETS. IN HEATHER’S CASE, IT WAS ‘MY BOY JACK’ A SHORT POEM BYRUDYARD KIPLING ABOUT HIS SEARCH FOR HIS ONLY SON WHO WAS LOST IN ACTION IN FRANCE DURINGWW1. FITTINGLY, THE GARDEN FEATURES A RED, WHITE AND BLUE COLOUR SCHEME. POPPIES ARE ALSOPROMINENT IN THE PLANTING WHICH INCLUDES BLOCKS OF BAY LAUREL RESEMBLING HEADSTONES.INTENDED TO BE EVOCATIVE OF A SEASIDE GARDEN, EVEN THOUGH IT IS SMALL, IT CONTAINS LOTS OFINTERESTING DETAIL, SUCH AS ROCKS, A BOARDWALK AND BIRD SCULPTURES. I ONLY HAD A SHORT TIME TOSHOOT IT, BUT I HOPE THESE IMAGES GIVE A SENSE OF WHAT MADE THE KIPLING GARDEN WORTHY OF THEGOLD MEDAL IT RECEIVED.INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY NOTICETHE IMAGES CONTAINED IN THIS PRESENTATION WERE CREATED BY GARY MARLOWE AND, WHILST BEINGAVAILABLE FOR VIEWING ON SLIDESHARE, THEY REMAIN THE INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY OF GARY MARLOWE.© GARY MARLOWE | 2011 gary marlowe
