Evaluation question 4
1. Evaluation Question 4:
How did you use media
technologies in the
construction and
research, planning and
evaluation stages?
2. Throughout the project, I used a variety of
technologies during the research, planning,
production and evaluation stages in order to
produce my final three products including a
DigiPak, Website, and pop genre Music Video.
The use of technology had different individual
purposes throughout each of the stages
making the project possible. Without the use
of these technologies it is very unlikely that
any of the products would have been created.
Or the products may not have been created to
the highest standard, therefore the audience
would have not been entertained fully.
3. Technologies Used Throughout
The Project
๏ง The Internet
๏ง BlogSpot
๏ง Facebook and Twitter
๏ง YouTube
๏ง IPhoneโs
๏ง Cannon 600D
๏ง Final Cut Pro
๏ง Adobe After Effects
๏ง Photoshop CS6
๏ง Adobe Fireworks
๏ง Wix.com (Website Builder)
๏ง Mixbook
๏ง Slideshare
๏ง Prezi
4. Research Stage
๏ง The Internet: The use of the internet was key to the success of the research stage of the project. The internet was needed to research the overall genre
of the three products we would eventually make, including the analysis of existing products to help this, as well as research into the target audience
through surveys and websites.
๏ง Slideshare and Prezi: Furthermore the information researched into was presented on various Slideshareโs and Prezi's acting as further forms of
technologies used throughout the production stages.
๏ง Survey Monkey: In order to carry out surveys on the target audience, Survey Monkey was another technology which had to be used in order to make
this possible.
๏ง Facebook and Twitter: The use of social media such as Facebook and Twitter made the distribution of these target audience surveys possible.
Furthermore the fact that it is known that the largest majority of social media users are young people, made it an appropriate form of technology to use in
order to research into the target audience.
๏ง YouTube: The use of the internet allowed me to access various existing products to use in my research, as they could be accessed via YouTube.
Furthermore the internet gave me access to Slideshare and Prezi, allowing me to present my research on the target audience, genre and what the three
products would eventually be like.
๏ง Due to the use of the internet alongside Slideshare and Prezi, this helped develop my research skills during the research stage of my production. This
was due to the wide range of information that could be accessed, therefore I had to use the information necessary to my production by separating
relevant information from irrelevant information researched into.
๏ง The result of the use of this technology during the research stages of the production allowed me to form the basis for what my chosen genre would be,
who my target audience would be in relation to the genre, and how my three products would eventually be focussed around the audience and genre.
6. Planning Stage
๏ง Cannon 600D: The use of the Cannon 600D as well as the internet were key to the success of the planning stage. This is due to the fact
that the Cannon 600D had to be used for the location hunting for the music video to finalise an appropriate set of locations to film in.
Furthermore the use of computers in general allowed me to write up a shooting script on Microsoft word, and the internet allowed me to
research into the mise en scene of what pop genre typically conforms to, in order to successfully plan how I would go about filming the
music video.
๏ง BlogSpot: Furthermore, the internet was key in presenting the information during the planning stages of the productions on my personal
blog on BlogSpot. Without my blog, the information during the research and planning stages would not have been easily accessible in
order to review to develop and create my three products including a DigiPak, Website, and Music Video. Furthermore, the treatment's for
the music video, DigiPak and Website were all written up on Microsoft word and presented onto the blog.
๏ง IPhoneโs: Similar to the use of the Cannon600D, the use of my IPhone was key during the planning stage of my production. This is due to
the fact that it made accessibility to the internet easy and possible. This meant I could take pictures of things relevant to the target genre
of my production researched into, and could easily and effectively be uploaded onto my blog on BlogSpot via the internet, which my
IPhone had access to. This was key in taking pictures of key conventions conforming to pop genre as part of the planning towards my
main music video product, as well as other DigiPakโs I came across in shops and websites I may have seen.
๏ง Scanner: The use of a scanner during the planning stages allowed me to scan a hand drawn spider diagram I made in response to the
brief I was given for the product onto the internet onto my blog in order to be presented. This was key as it allowed me to transfer a
hardcopy essential piece of planning onto my blog to review during the planning stages of my production in order to follow.
๏ง The use of the technology improved my skills associated with the use of technology, as I gained a better understanding of how BlogSpot
worked as well as Microsoft word in order to present my planning.
๏ง Furthermore, my planning skills improved, as the use of the cannon 600D allowed me to plan my filming locations in advance more
successfully by taking pictures of possible locations to reflect upon. Also this gave me more time to research how my chosen genre of pop
would collaborate with these possible shooting locations. Therefore my time management skills also improved during this stage as the
technologies I used allowed me to present and plan information easier and quicker.
8. Production Stage
๏ง Cannon600D: The use of the Cannon600D made the actual filming of the music video possible. The reason for using this instead of the Sony HDV1000E
is that it gave the music video a more realistic look. The fact that the music video was a dance track pop genre one meant that it had to be portrayed as
something in which the audience could relate to. Therefore the use of the Cannon600D as oppose to the SonyHDV1000E meant the resolution appeared to
make the music video look more realistic overall. Furthermore the use of the Cannon600D without a tripod meant that โbreathableโ shots could be used,
once again adding a sense of realism for the target audience to relate to. This allowed for the eventual successful shooting of the music video in central
London, house parties and a limo party.
๏ง Wix.com: The use of this website accessed via the internet allowed me to create the website product to work in collaboration with the music video and
DigiPak. This website allowed me to design the website in accordance to the typical conventions of pop genre, so that a house style could begin to be
established throughout all three products. Without the use of this website or access to the internet, creating a website for the music video would have been
near to impossible or would have been created to a poor ability.
๏ง Photoshop CS6: The use and accessibility of Photoshop made the creation of the DigiPak possible during the production stages of the project. I used the
editing programme to split the DigiPakโs main photo on the front cover into layers, where I then used the colour manipulation tool to change the colours of
the layers to give the picture a multi-coloured colour scheme. This was key in conforming to the conventions of pop genre, as well as conforming to the
house style of the Website and Music Video. Without the accessibility to this programme, it is unlikely that a DigiPak conforming to pop genre would have
been made, as without the use of technology, the DigiPak would have had to have been drawn up instead, meaning it wouldnโt have been to the best of its
ability.
๏ง Adobe Fireworks: The use of Adobe Fireworks made the template for the DigiPak possible. With the use of this programme I was able to create the basic
template for the front cover, CD cover and back cover of my DigiPak. The main photo edited previously on Photoshop was then inserted onto the template
created in Fireworks, showing the collaboration of two different programmes in order to successfully produce the DigiPak. Therefore without the use of
Fireworks in collaboration with Photoshop, a DigiPak would have most likely been created to a poor standard, meaning it wouldn't have entertained the
audience as much as it should have as planned in the research and planning stages of the production.
๏ง Final Cut Pro: Final Cut Pro was the most useful software on the Mac computers which I used in order to successfully edit my music video in the
production stages. I used the colour manipulation tool as well as the brightness and contrast manipulation tool on some of the clips within the video to
conform to the vibrant conventions of pop genre. Furthermore I added a bad TV effect on multiple clips in order to provoke a further sense of realism,
almost as if it is an old video that has been pulled out the back of there cupboard depicting people partying and having fun so that the target audience could
relate to the video more. Furthermore, the use of added lip syncing in time with the lyrics of the audio, as well as cutting the clips together was made
possible through the use of Final Cut Pro on the Mac computers. Additionally, the use of the time manipulation tool meant that specific clips could be
slowed down or sped up in order to collaborate with the slow and fast sections of the audio, and to further conform to the conventions of pop genre. Text
was also added on Final Cut Pro to reflect what is being sung within the audio, conforming to pop genre as it allows the audience to actively consume the
information presented to them. This programme was likely the most useful programme used throughout the production stage, as it ensured the successful
construction of the main music video product. Without it, it is unlikely that a video conforming successfully to pop genre would have been made, as the
effects and cuts used within the clip conformed to the conventions of pop genre explicitly.
9. Production Stage
๏ง Adobe After Effects: This programme was only used in one instance of the production when creating the
music video. One of the clips used in my music video depicted someone using their middle finger as an
inappropriate gesture. In order to make the video audience friendly, I used Adobe After Effects to blur out the
finger, as this also conforms to existing products which also use the same technique to signify an attempt to be
rebellious and explicit. If it wasnโt for the programme, it is likely that the clip depicting the gesture would have
needed to be removed.
๏ง YouTube: YouTube was an important technology that was used as it allowed me to upload my finished music
video in order to help spread its awareness via the internet. This use of this technology acted as a marketing
tool presenting the video on the internet highlighting its significance.
๏ง Facebook and Twitter: Similarly to YouTube, the use of social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter
during the production stages meant that the DigiPak, Website and Music Video productions could all be
presented to our target audience of teenagers to adults who are the age group most expected to be using social
networking sites. It acts as a marketing tool for all the products to establish brand awareness to the target
audience as they are the most expected age range to be using social networking sites, making the presentation
of my three main products on social networking sites applicable. Without the use or access to social networking
sites such as these, it is unlikely that the brand in which I created, holding the three products under its name
would have gained any brand awareness nor would it have successfully established a brand identity to the
target audience.
๏ง BlogSpot: BlogSpot was an important technology used throughout the production stage of the project due to
the fact that the final DigiPak design and changes which had to be made to it, Website, and Music video were
all presented on it.
๏ง The skills which I had developed during the production stage through the use of technology are time
management skills to ensure all the deadlines were met, team working skills with the members of my group as
we shared information in order to successfully finish producing all three products, as well as the use of editing
programmes such as Final Cut Pro, Adobe After Effects, Adobe Photoshop CS6, and Adobe Fireworks. The
development of my editing skills during the production stage of the project regarding the editing programmes,
allowed me to finalise and make changes to the products in order to entertain the target audience as best as
they could by successfully conforming to the conventions of pop genre. For example the development of my
Photoshop and Fireworks skills allowed me to make changes to my DigiPak design in order to create a new
design, more applicable to pop genre due to the use of bright vibrant colours I added instead.
12. Evaluation Stage
๏ง Prezi: For my first evaluation question regarding how my media product develops or challenges forms and conventions of media products, I
presented this information on Prezi accessed by the internet. The use and accessibility to this internet website allowed me to create an
interactive presentation to present the information within my evaluation of my overall music video. Without the access to this form of technology,
it is likely that the evaluation question wouldnโt have been presented as neatly and as interactively as this.
๏ง SlideShare: I used SlideShare to answer both the 2nd and 4th evaluation questions, as it is a form of technology that allows work created on
Microsoft PowerPoint to be transferred onto the internet to create an interactive free flowing presentation. Furthermore, the reason for uploading
my presentations onto SlideShare in the first place is because it allowed me to embed the code onto my blog so that the presentation would
appear as an interactive blog post, in order to present all my work in one central location. This form of technology allowed me to present my
work to a high standard, and made it easy to place onto my blog to present in one central location so that that my work was organised
appropriately. Without the use of SlideShare I wouldnโt have been able to make my presentations interactive, nor would I have been bale to
embed them onto my blog to present alongside my other information presented throughout the entire project.
๏ง MixBook: I used MixBook for my third evaluation question regarding how I used audience responses to develop or change my products.
MixBook is fairly similar to SlideShare in that it produces an interactive free flowing presentation of the information presented onto it. The only
difference is that the transition between each page resembles the turning of the pages of a book, hence why the website is called MixBook. I
used this to present my third evaluation question on because it is a different form of technology than Prezi and SlideShare to use. This presents
my knowledge and spread of various technologies used throughout my production, particularly during the evaluation stages of my project. This
allowed me to further present my knowledge and understanding as I was able to present this information by embedding it onto my blog on
BlogSpot. Without the use of this technology, although there were alternative methods to use in order to present the information regarding my
third evaluation question, I wouldnโt have been able to demonstrate my wide spread use of various internet technologies and programmes on
the blog.
๏ง Facebook and Twitter: Facebook and Twitter were key in presenting my finished products to my target audience due to the fact that they are
the age range most expected to be using social networking sites such as this, making the presentation of my products on these sites as
appropriate. Furthermore, it acted as a marketing scheme in order to establish brand awareness and brand identity to my target audience.
๏ง BlogSpot: BlogSpot was key during the evaluation stage of my production. This is due to the fact that all evaluation questions answered were
presented on my blog as a central area. This highlighted my organisation skills due to the fact I was able to embed all my evaluation questions
digitally onto my blog in an appropriate order. Without the use of BlogSpot as an accessible technology to use, I wouldnโt have been able to
present my work throughout my project, mainly including the evaluation in an appropriate chronological order, therefore I wouldnโt have been
able to develop my organisation skills.
๏ง During the evaluation stages, the accessibility to the variety of online technologies improved my knowledge, understanding and use skills. This
is due to the fact that because different forms of online technologies were used to present my evaluation question, highlights my ability to work
with a variety of formats with different properties. For example how different Prezi is to SlideShare through the use of slide transitions as well as
the ways text is presented and the way new slides or frames are added.
๏ง Furthermore, my organisation skills improved due to the accessibility to BlogSpot I had, and how I was able to embed my evaluation questions
as well as the other work I had done throughout the project onto it through copy and pasting the embed codes from Prezi, SlideShare and
MixBook work onto the HTML section where posts can be written up to post on BlogSpot. I was able to present all this work in one central
location in a chronological order which would be seen as most appropriate, further highlighting the development of my organisation skills.
