Question 1
1. In what ways does
your media product
use, develop, or
challenge forms and
conventions of real
media products?
2. I am going to start this presentation by looking at what the
conventions of a teaser trailer are:
Time limits – A teaser trailer is normally very short and can range from about 30 to 60
seconds, in this time the teaser trailer should give a brief outline or hints to what the
film is about or will be like.
Purpose – The purpose of a teaser trailer is to inform viewers of a new film that is soon
to be released.
Audience – A teaser trailer should leave the audience watching the teaser wanting to
watch the rest of the film. It should also give them a sneak peek of what the film will be
like so that they can decide on weather they like it or not.
Editing – The way a teaser trailer is edited is an important convention as most teasers
are montage edited or placed in chronological order to show a brief outline of the
storyline. Another common way of editing a teaser trailer is to have lots of short clips.
The pace of a trailer is normally fast or slow then picks up to fast.
Company Ident – Teaser trailers normally display production company or other
associated idents and logos at the beginning of the trailer.
3. How have I incorporated the conventions of a teaser trailer
into my own teaser trailer?
The teaser trailer is
0:49 seconds long
which in keeping with
the convention that a
teaser trailer should be
30 to 60 seconds long
It also gives a brief outline to what the film is about by
showing the key elements of the film such as drugs,
poker, young people, guns and kidnapping this helps
viewers to make the decision on weather they want to
watch the film or not.
Poker
Young people
We also chose to edit our
Guns
Drugs
trailer so that it starts of at a
slightly slower pace at the
beginning of the trailer but
then quickly builds up to a
fast pace edit with most of
our shots lasting 0:01 to 0:02
seconds.
We also decided to add our film title to the end of the trailer
which is commonly used in many other teaser trailers.
4. We decided to add company indents such as Warner bros our own production company and the
appropriate audiences approval sign to make our teaser seem like a real teaser and to
incorporate the conventions of one.
We also added Credits and a coming soon sign to the end of the teaser trailer to make the trailer
seem more realistic and because they are common conventions and things to have in a teaser
trailer.
We decided to add titles to our teaser trailer as when researching into
other teaser trailers such as “Runner runner” we were inspired as we
felt they helped to connect with the audience, give them more of an
idea of the storyline and make the narrative clearer. It also gave us a
chance to incorporate a teaser trailer convention and we stuck to this
by keeping the font of all the titles the same.
5. How have I incorporated the conventions of a magazine cover
into my own magazine cover?
One of the ways we followed the conventions of a magazine
cover is by making our own magazine cover look like an empire
magazine cover so that it had conventions of a real media text.
We did this by:
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
Adding a title to the top centre of the page.
Placing the date the magazine is being sold and the price of
the magazine.
A bar code.
The title of our film in the centre of the page.
Adding lots of text to the cover giving incites to what is in
the magazine.
Keeping a colour scheme of red, grey and white.
Placing the main character of the film in the foreground of
the magazine with their head in front of the empire title,
this is one of the conventions of an empire magazine.
Placing a dramatic smoke background behind everything to
give connotations of a action film.
Placing a film strip showing images of the film behind the
main character.
We also noticed when looking at the other films we got
inspiration from that they use the same title font and colours
throughout their campaign so we decided to use the same
throughout ours.
6. This is the piece of real media text
we used to base our own Magazine
cover on. We used the conventions
from this magazine to make our own
seem like a real magazine cover and
to use as a guide to help follow real
media conventions
7. How have I incorporated the conventions of a magazine cover
into my own magazine cover?
One of the ways we followed conventions of a poster is by
creating our own poster but following the conventions of a
“Dark knight” poster so that our poster has conventions of
a real media text.
We did this by:
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
Adding the main actors of the film names to the top of
the poster.
Placing the character in the centre of the page holding
a card to draw the audiences eyes to the poster and
show connotations of poker.
Placed the text coming soon at the bottom of the page
to show the movie is not released yet.
We added the company indents to the bottom of the
poster to make it look more professional.
The films website address on the bottom right of the
poster as the Dark night poster has done the same.
I also created a picture to go at the bottom centre of
the page to make the poster look more interesting and
professional, also it is one of the conventions used on
the “Dark knight” poster although they used a Batman
logo instead of the cards and fire.
We decided to make the lighting on the poster dark
and dramatic as this is one of the conventions of a
action thriller film poster.
8. This is the Dark Knight poster we found
inspiration from and chose to use as a guide
to help us follow the conventions of a real
magazine cover. We based our own poster on
this one so that we could use it as a guide to
make our own look more realistic.
