La carta sellada de Sta. Teresa Benedicta de la Cruz (Edith Stein) a S.S. Pío XI sobre la
persecución de los judíos en Alemania.
“¡Santo Padre!
Como hija del pueblo judío, que, por la gracia de Dios, desde hace once años es también
hija de la Iglesia católica, me atrevo a exponer ante el Padre de la Cristiandad lo que oprime a
millones de alemanes.
Desde hace unas semanas vemos sucederse acontecimientos en Alemania que suenan a
burla de toda justicia y humanidad, por no hablar del amor al prójimo. Durante años los jefes
(Führer) nacionalsocialistas han predicado el odio a los judíos. Después de haber tomado el
poder gubernamental en sus manos y armado a sus aliados, -entre ellos a señalados elementos
criminales-, ya han aparecido los resultados de esa siembra de odio. Hace poco el mismo
gobierno admitió el hecho de que ha habido excesos. No nos podemos hacer una idea de la
amplitud de estos hechos porque la opinión pública está amordazada. Pero a juzgar por lo que
he venido a saber por informaciones personales, de ningún modo se trata de casos aislados. Bajo
presión de voces del extranjero, el régimen ha pasado a métodos más “suaves”. Ha dado la
consigna de que no se debe “tocar ni un pelo a ningún judío”. Pero con su declaración de boicot,
lleva a muchos a la desesperación, pues con ese boicot roba a los hombres su mera subsistencia
económica, su honor de ciudadanos y su patria. Por noticias privadas he conocido en la última
semana cinco casos de suicidio a causa de estas persecuciones. Estoy convencida de que se trata
sólo de una muestra que traerá muchos más sacrificios. Se pretende justificar con el lamento de
que los infelices no tienen suficiente fuerza para soportar su destino. Pero la responsabilidad cae
en gran medida sobre los que lo llevaron tan lejos. Y también cae sobre aquellos que guardan
silencio sobre esto.
Todo lo que ha acontecido y todavía sucede a diario viene de un régimen que se llama
“cristiano”. Desde hace semanazas, no solamente los judíos, sino miles de auténticos católicos
en Alemania, y creo que en el mundo entero, esperan y confían en que la Iglesia de Cristo
levante la voz para poner término a este abuso del nombre de Cristo. ¿Esa idolatria de la raza y
del poder del Estado con la que día a día se machaca por radio a las masas, acaso no es patente
herejía? ¿No es la guerra de exterminio contra la sangre judía un insulto a la Sacratísima
Humanidad de Nuestro Redentor, a la Santísima Virgen y a los apóstoles? ¿No está todo esto en
absoluta contradicción con el comportamiento de Nuestro Señor y Salvador quien aún en la
Cruz rogó por sus perseguidores? ¿Y no es esto una negra mancha en la crónica de este Año
Santo que debería ser un año de paz y de reconciliación?
Todos los que somos fieles e hijos de la Iglesia y que consideramos con ojos despiertos la
situación en Alemania nos tememos lo peor para la imagen de la Iglesia si se mantiene el
silencio por más tiempo. Somos también de la convicción de que a la larga ese silencio de
ninguna manera podrá obtener la paz con el actual régimen alemán. La lucha contra el

catolicismo se llevará por un tiempo en silencio, y por ahora con formas menos brutales que
contra el judaísmo, pero no será menos sistemática. No falta mucho para que pronto, en
Alemania, ningún católico pueda tener cargo alguno si antes no se entrega incondicionalmente
al nuevo rumbo.

“Als ein Kind des jüdischen Volkes, das durch Gottes Gnade seit elf Jahren ein Kind der
katholischen Kirche ist, wage ich es, vor dem Vater der Christenheit auszusprechen, was
Millionen von Deutschen bedrückt.
Seit Wochen sehen wir in Deutschland Taten geschehen, die jeder Gerechtigkeit und
Menschlichkeit –von Nächstenliebe gar nicht zu reden- Hohn sprechen. Jahre hindurch haben
die nationalsozialistischen Führer den Judenhass gepredigt. Nachdem sie jetzt die
Regierungsgewalt in ihre Hände gebracht und ihre Anhängerschat –darunter nachweislich
verbrecherische Elemente- bewaffnet hatten, ist diese Staat des Hasses aufgegangen. Dass
Ausschreitungen vorgekommen sind, wurde noch vor kurzem von der Regierung zugegeben. In
welchem Umfang, davon können wir uns kein Bild machen weil die öffentliche Meinung
geknebelt ist. Aber nach dem zu urteilen was mir durch persönliche Beziehungen bekannt
geworden ist, handelt es sich keineswegs um vereinzelte Ausnahmefälle. Unter dem Druck der
Auslandsstimmen ist die Regierung zu milderen Methoden ubergegangen. Sie hat die Parole
ausgegeben, es solle keinem Juden ein Haar gekrümmt werden. Aber sie treibt durch ihre
Boykotteklärung -dadurch, das sie den Menschen wirtschaftliche Existenz, bürgerliche Ehre
und ihr Vaterland nimmt- viele zur Verzweiflung: es sind mir in der letzten Woche durch private
Nachriten 5 Fällen von Selbstmord inforge dieser Anfeindungen bekannt geworden. Ich bin
überzeugt, dass es sich um eine allgemeine Erscheinung handelt, die noch viel Opfer fordern
wird. Man mag bedauern, dass die Unglücklichen nicht mehr inneren Halt haben, um ihr
Schicksal zu tragen. Aber die Verantwortung fällt doch zum grossen Teil auf die, die sie so weit
brachten. Und sie fällt auch auf die, die dazu schweigen.
Alles, was geschehen ist und noch täglich geschieht, geht von einer Regierung aus die sich
christlich nennt. Seit Wochen warten und hoffen nicht nur die Juden, sondern Tausende treuer
Katholiken in Deutschland –und ich denke, in der ganzen Welt- darauf, dass die Kirche Christi
ihre Stimme erhebe, um diesem Missbrauch des Namens Christi Einhalt zu tun. Ist nicht diese
Vergötzung der Rasse und der Staatsgewalt, die täglich durch Rundfunk den Massen
eingehämmert wird, eine offene Häresie?Ist nicht der Vernichtungskampf gegem das jüdische
Blut eine Schmähung der allerheiligsten Menschheit unseres Erlösers, der allerseligsten
Jungfrau und der Apostel? Steht nicht dies alles im äussersten Gegensatz zum Verhalten
unseres Herrn und Heilands, der noch am Kreuz für seiner Verfolger betete? Und ist es nicht
ein schwarzer Flecken in der Chronik dieses Heiligen Jahres, das ein Jahr des Friedens und der
Versöhnung werden sollten?
Wir alle , die wir treue Kinder der Kirche sind und die Verhältnisse in Deutschland mit
offenen Augen betrachten, fürchten das Schlimmste für das Ansehen der Kirche, wenn das
Schweigen noch länger anhält. Wir sind auch der Überzeugung, dass dieses Schweigen nicht
imstanden sein wird, auf die Dauer den Frieden mit der gegenwärtigen deutschen Regierung zu
erkaufen. Der Kampf gegen den Katholizismus wird vorläuftig noch in der Stille und in weniger

Text of Letter to the Pope from Edith Stein
Holy Father!
As a child of the Jewish people who, by the grace of God, for the past eleven years has also
been a child of the Catholic Church, I dare to speak to the Father of Christianity about that
which oppresses millions of Germans. For weeks we have seen deeds perpetrated in Germany
which mock any sense of justice and humanity, not to mention love of neighbor. For years the
leaders of National Socialism have been preaching hatred of the Jews. Now that they have
seized the power of government and armed their followers, among them proven criminal
elements, this seed of hatred has germinated. The government has only recently admitted that
ex- cesses have occurred. To what extent, we cannot tell, because public opinion is being
gagged. However, judging by what I have learned from personal relations, it is in no way a
matter of singular exceptional cases. Under pressure from reactions abroad, the government has
turned to "milder" methods. It has issued the watchword "no Jew shall have even one hair on his
head harmed." But through boycott measures--by robbing people of their livelihood, civic honor
and fatherland--it drives many to desperation; within the last week, through private reports I was
informed of five cases of suicide as a consequence of these hostilities. I am convinced that this
is a general condition which will claim many more victims. One may regret that these unhappy
people do not have greater inner strength to bear their misfortune. But the responsibility must
fall, after all, on those who brought them to this point and it also falls on those who keep silent
in the face of such happenings.
Everything that happened and continues to happen on a daily basis originates with a government
that calls itself "Christian." For weeks not only Jews but also thousands of faithful Catholics in
Germany, and, I believe, all over the world, have been waiting and hoping for the Church of
Christ to raise its voice to put a stop to this abuse of Christ’s name. Is not this idolization of race
and governmental power which is being pounded into the public consciousness by the radio
open heresy? Isn't the effort to destroy Jewish blood an abuse of the holiest humanity of our
Savior, of the most blessed Virgin and the apostles? Is not all this diametrically opposed to the
conduct of our Lord and Savior, who, even on the cross, still prayed for his persecutors? And
isn't this a black mark on the record of this Holy Year which was intended to be a year of peace
and reconciliation?
We all, who are faithful children of the Church and who see the conditions in Germany with
open eyes, fear the worst for the prestige of the Church, if the silence continues any longer. We
are convinced that this silence will not be able in the long run to purchase peace with the present
German government. For the time being, the fight against Catholicism will be conducted quietly

Catholic will be able to hold office in Germany unless he dedicates himself unconditionally to
the new course of action.
