Paula Rego was born in Lisbon in 1935 and attended school there. She moved to London in 1954 to attend art school, where she met her future husband. Rego is recognized as one of the top living painters in England, though she often returns to Portugal to exhibit her work. Her surrealist and expressionist paintings tell stories through large canvases and feature grotesque fairy tale characters portrayed in a cynical or cruel manner, representing her imagination. Rego continues to work and live in London, exhibiting her pieces in a free gallery called House of Stories in Cascais, Portugal.

In 1954, encouraged by her father, she moved to London
to attend the Slade School of Art at the age of 17.
