Frequently Asked Questions: what makes a strong referral?

These “frequently asked questions” sheet gives an in-depth look at the criteria we use to
qualify clients. Together with the “loan questionnaire”, this FAQ guide should allow you
to see if your clients fit our profile and are considered a strong referral. Save time by
reviewing this sheet before referring clients to us. If you have any questions regarding
loan criteria, feel free to e-mail one of our loan officers at loans@accionusa.org

CREDIT

• ACCION USA does lend to individuals with a Zero FICO Score or business owners
    with no personal credit.
• What’s important is a healthy credit profile including: 1) relatively low balances (not
already overextended), 2) healthy percentage of available credit, especially for start
up businesses, and 3) open accounts that are current.
• Credit issues that will disqualify borrowers:

       A FICO score below 575
Lateness in the last 12 months on Rent or Mortgage
Currently past due on child support.
More than $3,000 in unpaid judgments, collections, liens, charge-offs, medical,
       etc.
Bankruptcy within the last 12 months.
Property foreclosure within the last 2 years.
       More than 3 properties
Adjustable Rate Mortgages (ARM) adjusting during the term of the loan or Pick-
       a-Payment or Negative Amortization loans

LOAN PURPOSE
• ACCION USA makes loans for business purposes. We look for well-defined,
detailed loan requests that will help increase business operations and profits. We look
  for:

Detailed list of expenditures, preferably with highest priority first.
Contributes to the positive growth of business.

• Ineligible purposes include:

Down payments on any real estate or closing costs on property.
Consolidation of personal credit card debt.

CASH FLOW
• One of the key components ACCION USA analyzes is the cash flow of a business
and household to determine the client’s ability to repay the loan requested.

• Our loan officers will work with clients to:

ACCION USA – 56 Roland St., Suite 300 Boston, MA 02129
            Phone: (866) 245-0783 Fax: (877) 787-2574 www.accionusa.org
Examine sales versus expenses in order to demonstrate capacity to repay loan.
Review business and personal bank statements, internal records and/or tax returns.
Please note that start-ups must present 12-months of financial projections and a
business plan, and have an additional source of income.

INDUSTRIES
• Ineligible industries:
Other Lenders; non-profit organizations (unless they have a source of consistent
revenue that is not dependent on grants); adult entertainment or fire arms; real
estate related industries such as: Mortgage brokers, Title agencies, apartment
management companies; stock market or gambling businesses; Pyramid or Multi-
      level marketing schemes.

• Considered higher-risk industries, but may be considered:
       General Contractors;
       Transportation;
       Manufacturers,
       Arts;
       Import/Export

COSIGNER/GUARANTEE
• Co-signers are used to secure a loan. ACCION USA will inform a client if his/her
  application requires a co-signer.

• All CO-SIGNERS MUST:
        • Complete application and sign loan documents
        • Be at least 21 years old
        • Have stable employment with verifiable income
        • Have solid credit history
