Moldavite, A Strange Glassy Substance
1. Moldavite, A Strange Glassy Substance
Moldavite can be a strange looking substance in its raw form or the form it comes
out of the ground as. It is of a bottle green color and glassy type texture, and is
said to have been formed by an extremely large meteorite impact. Its origin was
originally thought to have been in Bohemia and Moravia but it has also been
found in other shapes and textures in several places in the world.
At one stage it was thought to be an artificial type glass substance, but as there
was no place close by of any glass production this was dismissed. It was also
thought to be of a type of obsidian but this was also dismissed as it did not appear
to be of any volcanic origin.
One of the things that was noticed however, was that it had a strange wrinkle and
pitting of its surface areas. After some investigation it was then believed that it
had to be of a meteorite origin because the texture on its surface was similar to
the way others of these are marked.
Similar substances have also been found in Tasmania and Australia where they
are called bombs and buttons, or australites. They are also found in Indonesia and
are called billitonite but are a shiny black type color. Sweden is another place
where they have been located. Most of the green glassy substance occurs in the
Czech Republic, Germany, Austria and the Moldova Republic.
It is said to have occurred when a meteorite, some fifteen million years ago, hit
the Earth and sent molten rock into the air which cooled before it landed, most of
which came to rest in Bohemia. The amount of this substance is quite limited and
has been estimated at about two hundred and seventy five tons and will possibly
be depleted within ten years.
There are two grades, the first is the high quality which is very much sort after
and has a fern like design with an opaque or transparent look. The second is of
lesser quality and does not quite possess the traits of the other. The high quality
type is sort after by jewelry makers who use it to make hand crafted items for
selling to up market clients.
There is also a great difference in the price as the higher quality type produces
better finished and more saleable items. It is also prized for use in alternate
healing such as that of the ancient Indian art of chakra. It is used by some as a
2. healing tool to help restore the energy flow through blocked chakras with its
enhancement on other gemstones.
There are many things now being reported as to what moldavite can and cannot
do and the ways it may or may not work. For those that are not very sure then it
may be a sensible idea to do some research on this subject before making any
hasty decisions. As it is becoming quite rare then it will become more expensive
and knowing good quality from lesser quality may be important when making any
investment for any reason.
