The teacher will be teaching a high school music appreciation class made up of mostly middle class local students with equal numbers of boys and girls who learn best through audio/visual means and research projects. The objectives are for students to critically analyze, describe, evaluate, and make inferences about music and its relationships to other subjects by the end of the class. On Friday, students will create presentations using Voki.com to cumulatively summarize everything they learned about opera for the week, to prove their appreciation and understanding of opera. The teacher will assess each student individually against state standards to evaluate whether the unit objectives were successfully met.
High School Students Prove Opera Appreciation with Voki Presentations
1. Friday ASSURE
A Analyze the learners
I will be teaching public high school students grades 9-12, in the setting of a music
appreciation class. The class shows a homogenous demographic of middle class, locally born
students. There is an equal mix of boys and girls. Most express an audio or visual based
learning style, and have responded well to research and reflection based assignments.
S State Objectives
Exploring
The student, with
precision and selfdirection, critically
analyzes music. The
student insightfully
describes and
evaluates music and
music performances.
Relating
The student explains,
evaluates and makes
inferences about the
relationships between
music, global cultures,
the other arts and
disciplines. The
student’s observations
demonstrate critical
thinking and are wellreasoned and
insightful.
Appraisal
The Student shows
mastery of the context
and content of
musical works, by
active listening,
critical reviewing, and
relating their
assessment of a piece
of music.
Friday Objective
High school students, grades 9-12, will prove they have a firm grasp of the appreciation
of opera. They will prove this with a presentation which utilizes Voki.com. The students will
accomplish this with 100% accuracy by the end of class.

2. Friday will be entirely devoted to the completion and presentation of a final project.
Students will create a voki which relates a cumulative summary of all the important information
in the week-long unit. The presentations may last twenty to thirty minutes. Students will prove
that they have an appreciation of opera, even if they do not like it. The voki presentation will be
followed by questions from me if I feel something was left out.
R Require Learner Participation
Friday’s assignments will be self-directed and intense. These projects will require
research, compilation and condensation of material, and critical thinking. As this is an individual
assessment, students will work alone. Time restrictions will necessitate efficient work.
E Evaluate and Revise
I will assess students individually. The presentations must meet the standards set by the
state. These standards will be used like a rubric. I will have taken note of the entire class’s
progress both daily and finally on Friday. This last assessment will show whether the unit was
an overall success or failure, depending on the quality of presentations developed by students.
