properly put on turnout
gear used by fire fighters.
Fire fighters have to put on
gear in a timely manor
because time is everything in
the fire service. The unspoken
rule in the fire service is that
it shouldn’t take you longer
than two minutes to put on
the entire gear.
3. The following video shows a fire fighter drill on putting on turnout gear. The goal of
this drill is to put on the gear as fast as you can in a safe manor and to properly
assemble the gear on yourself. VIDEO

FIRST
1. Put on Bunker Pants
along with Boots.
The boots will already be inside
of the bunker pants so all the
individual has to do is place
their feet in the boots and pull
the bunker pants that are rolled
down up with the suspenders
going over their shoulder.

What is Nomex?
Nomex is the brand name for an
inherently flame-resistant aramid
fiber that is manufactured only by
DuPont.REFERENCE: DuPont
The Nomex hood is donned first to
insure that the individual wearing the
turnout gear has their neck covered
along with their head.

3. Put on the coat.

When putting on the coat, make
sure the bottom of the Nomex
hood is inside the coat. Then, zip
up the coat as well as Velcro the
protective strip over the zipper.
This will help protect the zipper as
well as decrease the heat entering
the coat.

8. HELMET

4. Put on helmet and secure
chin strap for safety.
The fire helmet serves two purposed.
The first, is that it protects your head
from any falling debris that you might
encounter. The second, is that the
helmet is equipped with built in eye
protection. This eye protection is used
during vehicle extrication.

5. Put on gloves.
The gloves that fire fighters use are
specially made for interior fire fighting.
These gloves can withstand heat and
steam.
10. After completing those five steps, you should be ready to safely respond to a fire
call with your turnout gear properly on. The following video is a demonstration of
how to properly put on your turnout by using the five steps I mentioned above.
