4 Tips to Get Your Roof Ready for Winter
As the cooler weather approaches
and the kids are getting ready for a
new school year, it’s also time to be
prepared for the heavy rain and
snow. Fall is a beautiful time of year
and it’s time to zip up our jackets as
well as our homes. From now till the
first winter freeze, there are four
important things you should do now
so you can protect your roof during
the inclement winter weather.
Gutters
As fallen leaves and other debris get inside your gutters, it can create a
serious clog that will block the downspouts. Eventually, rain begins to
overflow, causing serious damage to your roof, trim, and even siding.
Additional weight from the wet leaves can also add stress to your gutters
and pull them downward, causing a potential collapse.
In order to prevent this from happening, be sure all leaves and sticks are
completely removed from your gutters. As the trees begin to become bare,
clean the gutters again to ensure there are no excess branches in the
gutters. Get ahead of the game by adding extra screens or gutter guards to
keep more leaves from getting in.

Cleaning Debris
In order to keep your roof safe during the winter, remove all pine needles,
leaves, and other fallen debris from the top of your roof. Any small amount
of debris that sits can hold excess moisture and cause rotting and mold
issues. This will break down your roof over time, causing serious problems.
If you feel safe enough to get on top of your roof, sweep any excess debris
off with a broom or use a leaf blower. Pay careful attention to the valleys of
the roof because they are the areas that are the most susceptible to water
damage. By clearing debris, you also clear the way for all of the excess rain
and melted snow to flow freely.
Checking for Damages
Once your roof has been cleaned off, take a look at the surface and ensure
everything is clean and smooth. If you see any shingles with fraying or
cracked edges, try to get them replaced as soon as possible. You can also
use a pair of binoculars in order to see everything from the ground rather
than get on top of it with a ladder.
Other areas to check for damage include the vent stacks, skylights, and
chimneys. These areas are also places that could cause leaking related
issues. You may be able to repair the flashing yourself, but if not, be sure to
call a professional who can assist you with the repairs.
Ventilation and Insulation of the Attic
Another area to pay attention to is your attic. It should have enough airflow
or else you may most likely have much higher electrical bills. You could also

experience leaking into the attic during snowy weather. As the sun hits your
roof, the air inside your attic will heat up quickly. Vents should be installed
near soffits, the gables of your roof, as well as the soffits. Without them, the
hot air will condensate and cause moisture damage and mold near the
supports of your roof.
