Advantages of the Multifocal Intraocular
Lens
As founder of Shady Grove Ophthalmlogy, Dr. Anthony Roberts has performed
numerous vision correction surgeries, including cataract removal and LASIK.
Particularly experienced in lens exchange procedures, Dr. Anthony Roberts
commands an in-depth knowledge of multifocal intraocular lenses.
Advantages of the Multifocal Intraocular
Lens
For patients with cataracts, the multifocal intraocular lens has emerged as
treatment method without the limitations of the monofocal intraocular lens
(IOL). Once the only option for these patients, the monofocal IOL allows for
either distance or near vision, but cannot accommodate both types of vision. As a
result, patients had to commit to one type of vision in each eye, wear reading
glasses for any close activity, or adapt to seeing clearly at only an intermediate
distance.
Advantages of the Multifocal Intraocular
Lens
The intraocular lens offers vision at multiple distances. Certain models, such as
the popular ReSTOR lens or the AMO Tecnis, direct light based on the lens zone
that receives it, thereby automatically selecting the focus type. The ReZoom,
meanwhile, uses concentric rings to focus light depending on the diameter of the
pupil at a given time. Physicians select the proper technology based on patient
needs and habits, such as frequent night driving or computer use.
