My kids tell people I sell cell phones to chickens
POTS is good ole Ma Bell, she’s been there since the airplane, she’s still here now. Show of hands, how many people don’t have a home phone anymore? We have a lot a great technology from “a few” years ago that works well with Ma Bell. I don’t want to date myself, but here are some other things that I know were popular at the same time that data communications became prevalent over POTS lines. The K-CarSony WalkmanVCRDuran DuranThe Fax Machine The next slide has a great timeline of how far the fax has progressed technologically since it was introduced in the 1980’s.
1980 – The Fax Machine is introduced, as we know it today. An interesting bit of Trivia is that Exxon purchased a company called QWIP in the late 70’s Qwip was known for a device they placed on oil derricks to help geologists collect data from far away remote places. The device hooked to the phone line, and transmitted geological graphs via POTS line. I need a volunteer

Today we still rely heavily on phone lines to transmit alerts when we’re unable to be in our poultry houses physically. This is a sound idea and practice. It has served us well since the first systems debuted more than 20 years ago. Unfortunately, lightning frequently enters through the phone line. Wires in the ground provide the path for lightening to take your sensitive electronics out of service. Legacy systems that operate on POTS lines operate in an unsupervised environment and leave our industry exposed to unnecessary mortality risks. If your system has left you a victim of a communication failure, how many times are you willing to be a victim?
Anyone have a Chicken Alarm? Burglar Alarm companies have discovered that growers are willing to pay to be monitored.Guess what most burglar alarms use? Some now use phone lines, BUT they’re not any different from the legacy “alarm” systems
Today’s cloud based technology is about the same age. Previously it was only available to those with the deepest of pockets. HP, IBM, The Government. Since Salesforce.com coined the term, “Cloud Computing” and began parceling out affordable chunks of Mega Computing power in 1999, the technology has only improved and become more affordable. It’s now cost competitive with legacy systems.

Getting the phone call from a dialer based system has been around for 20+ years. Paper has been around since 3500 BC according to The Paper Museum at Georgia Tech.Paper is great, it’s reliable, It travels pretty well if it’s kept dry. It’s lightweight. You can put things on it. It isn’t known for bio-security. Pathogens like paper too
What can modern technology do?
Smart Farms Artificial Intelligence learns what a proper alarm is for each house over timeMeaningful alarms mean a better grower experience, which helps eliminate the boy the cried wolf mentalitySmart Alerts are tiered
Supervised Connectivity When your farm isn’t communicating we know Automated Data Collection avoids fat finger or other human entry errorsHow many times have you been in a poultry house only to find that the grower has 40 birds die every 4 days? What does that mean they are doing? Programmable Temperature Curves allow for tighter management with more meaningful alarms and, that speaks directly to how we’re driving performance with our proven technology You name the sensor, you can have it. There are no longer physical limitations to the number of sensors or notification events you can have.
