- 2. Big Data – What’s all the Buzz About? The big buzz in the computing world these days surrounds Big Data. Big Data is the product of the volumes of data produced by the billions of connected devices online today. Everything, from shopping habits and booking information to pharmaceutical research and new approaches to studying weather patterns, is Big Data. With more new devices connecting to the internet every single day, Big Data is the relentless stream of data that flows from all of it. Big Data represents a significant step forward from current forms of research. The pharmaceutical industry, for example, is using Big Data to discover overlooked potential cures to major diseases. Consider the case of a drug like minoxidil. The drug was originally used to treat high blood pressure. It had an interesting side effect: it produced hair growth. It was only years later that it was repurposed as a topical treatment for baldness. With modern Big Data, these unanticipated uses of drugs can be mined rapidly to produce results quicker. For the pharmaceutical industry, Big Data is helping to turn previous failures into new successes. Big Data also allows us to pull together more data than ever before. Weather researchers are rapidly compiling new data sources from millions of smartphone users. This amounts to having a weather station wherever there is a smartphone user. This affords researchers a level of granularity never before possible. All this data brings us closer to seeing the exact moment a butterfly flaps its wings in China and triggers a hurricane in America. The amount of data available is simply unprecedented. The range of possibilities is as wide as human interest. The camera industry is mining EXIF data from online photos to better customise cameras to how real world users utilise them. Police forces are using Big Data to predict crime waves and deliver resources to areas before things spiral downward. Flu researchers are using Google queries to derive information from areas before a full blown outbreak appears. If something produces information, you can almost bet someone somewhere is building a data set to explore undiscovered patterns. The rise of Big Data is also being driven by the emergence of cloud computing. This allows us to pull together larger data sets and more computational power than ever before. With on-demand, scalable storage available on the cheap, the cloud is making Big Data accessible to anyone with an internet connection. Big Data is just in its infancy. Technologies like IPv6, which allows even the smallest nanotech to get an IP address and connect to the internet, are opening up even smaller sources of more specific data.
