1. Influence of L1 in the acquisition of L2
Dannae Del Campo Méndez
The process of acquiring a second language includes factors that can be
considered as positive or negative ones. During this assignment I realized that the
influence of an L1 in an English class depends on us, future teachers. The use of
Spanish in an English class is not completely wrong but the use of too much Spanish it
will be damaging for learners. As long as teachers help students to make useful
connections it will be useful to the class and not only helping them but also teachers
should be aware on their students’ needs and interests in the classroom rather than what
they will need in the future so we can keep them motivated. Thus, teachers will guide
the issue of interference of L1 in L2 in a way to make it a positive factor. Plus, it is also
quite important to challenge our students so they can improve their knowledge because
if we give them an input which is below their capacity they will not progress in their
learning.
Finally, having knowledge about the strategies and issues in the process of
acquiring a second language will help us, as future teachers to develop a class in which
students will truly progress.
