Consider all ramifications (legal, moral) before carrying!
Prepare physically and mentally before carrying!
Exhaust all resources before you use your pistol!
Be a responsible and safe CCW permit holder!
Train with you CCW pistol, not just your safe queen!
Take advantage of your permit, police confrontations!
When you decide to carry, carry everywhere! BUT…

Final Words!
How is everybody? Thank you for coming!
Can everybody see, hear?
First of all, do not fill anything out until I tell you to!
NO LIVE FIRE RIGHT?!
Why will you carry?
I assume each of you have some background in firearms, so I wont cover too many basics
Work? Self protection? Home?
Mention this is not a beginner course, and no live fire per colorado state law, would you like training?
Alex Taylor- firearms whole life, shooting in rock quarrys in texas and woods in Alaska, have been in many training classes…still do. Decided to start teaching after realizing there were many new gun owners out there, and seeing many friends and family that didn’t have much training. Background is customer service
Our class will be about 3 hours, may go faster or slower depending on questions
If I cant answer a question I will find the answer for you
Breaks – regular, sections unless anybody needs to have one in between
And we will discuss many different aspects of concealed carry
Before we go on, exits, bathrooms, and I have a cell phone and will call 911 in case of an accident
Please ask questions at any time
CCW is a lifestyle
change parts of your life when you carry:
From the The way you sit, reach, or hug to the way you act on your 5 senses
pistol by your side you feel skeptical of people or places
Overall more confident, sense of respect and autonomy with surroundings
Most Importantly-Pistol always in back of mind, know you will provide safety for you and ones around you
But, can you kill if your life depended on it?
Lets go over types of pistols and concealment- this may be basics for some, bear with me
Mostly Depends on body size, and clothing for ccw
Safeties!- Internal, External, trigger (DA), decocker
FRAME- Polymer-Strong, light, moisture resistant or Steel- strong, less recoil, not as much plastic? CZ100 or SIG P210-6
GRIP- short, long, wide…hand size
SIGHTS- dovetail, fixed, adjustable, small, big
Caliber- .22 to .50, whats gonna fit?
Round Count – well placed shots=less rounds, more rounds=less acuracy
Holster Selection- paddle, iwb, owb, belly, shoulder, etc
Try A lot of different pistols- store, range
Buy Used for cost concerns but remember Parts available?ask gunsmith, check recalls, do you get manual, is it available?
Next, pros cons gun sizes
KELTEC P32-7.8oz
Easy to conceal! Almost no imprinting
Lightweight- 7o, less than 3in barrel, less than 4 high, width less than an inch
From 22’s to springfield xds 45
Smaller the gun, higher the recoil- weight will sometimes help
Usually only around 6 rounds
Sometimes needs pinky extensions
Some will have very gritted down sights, hard to see especially if you have bad eye sight
Bigger hands can be hurt by slide
Desert Eagle 357 Mark I
More weight=less recoil
Upwards of 20+ rounds, some 33 round mags-try to conceal that…
22 1911’s- to .50 caliber desert eagles
Interchangeable grips and back straps
Interchangeable sights, night-optic-adjustable
Imprinting can happen
For weightwatchers- might gain a pound or two with this one
Up to 37oz
How about revolver vs semi auto?
Malfunctions-
Maintenance- Revolver in safe forever still fires
Fewer springs and plastic to wear out
If you are willing to clean and maintain semi-auto you get:
More calibers, more rounds, polymer frames for durability against sweat, many people find easier to shoot
Next, holsters
Outside the Waistband (OWB)- Open Carry, Hard to Conceal, unless under jacket, vest, sometimes long shirt, thumb breaks?
Inside the Waistband (IWB) – Easy to Conceal, clip or strap to belt, or belt retention, some tuckable
Pocket Holster- generally for very small guns, typically stays in pocket when drawn, sticky type
Ankle Holsters- Wrap around leg, usually for smaller guns, easier to conceal but harder to reach
Shoulder – 2 positions vertical, horizontal, distribute weight among shoulders under jacket vest, sometimes shirt
Belly Band- Elastic Band for comfort with built in holster, can be worn in any position 12oclock-12oclock, can be worn above around or below waistband
Deep Concealment Holster- usually around groin area, very easy concealment, Sometimes uncomfortable, not much restrictions
Retention Holster- any position on waist, like pocket in material, less bulky then IWB or OWB kydex, uncomfortable waist
Purse/Fanny/Cell Phone type- Very easy concealment, easy to get to, (big man with fanny pack)
Many brands! Almost a new brand everyday
Next, draw
Demonstration
Extend while gripping with two hands, defense indexing (guard position, and such (no sights))
Engage threat!, asses surroundings!
Next, 21 foot rule
On the high end of 2.5 seconds for attacker with weapon to get to you at 30 feet, practice draw!
Average 2 seconds, quickest police test 1.75 seconds
If average draw is 1.5 seconds that only leave ¼ second to shoot at minimum
Practice, practice, practice drawing!!!
Practice at 3, 9 and 7 yards
Next, holster choosing tips
Demonstration some with holsters and orange gun
Safety- retention for drawing, open/closed muzzle end, hold in place
Concealment- Holds close to body
Draw Ease- shirt lifting, pull retention, pocket, ankle
Reholstering- mold to easily reholster or soft
Adjustability- cant, position (left or right)
Positions- Small of back, 12 oclock, hip, 5 oclock etc
Youll go through A LOT, find one that gives you the best of all aspects
How about car concealment?
For those not wanna carry while in car (not recommended, just another way you know your gun is there its there!)
You can stuff your kydex holster between seats, but its not very safe
Do not tuck your un holstered gun in seat
Glove box is ok, but not much ease of access
Fobus Auto Mount
Or if engineer you could make something, just make sure it has retention and is stable
Next, SO…
Find a gun that fits well and is comfortable I your hand
Find a holster that is comfortable for you and has everything you desire
Always remember you can find the perfect fit but you will always feel your gun, always know its there, and it will some kind of have some uncomfortable feel
But its good so you know where to reach!
(Break, ammo and fun stuff after break!)
4 – not holstered
3 – take extra time to chamber, remember there is none (extra steps suck!)
2 – still have to cock for sa like 1911, can just pull trigger for da, and revolver
1- one of the safest, easier for those who practice!
0 – striker fire, internal safeties, with practice you will alsways no its ready to go!
Next, Ammo, you know primer, charge and so forth, that’s not what we’re here for
May be cheaper, not as reliable, not as efficient (misfires, squibs, etc)
Also may penetrate too deep, going through one object and traveling to another
(experiences-1-2 of every mag FTF with Tula, white box winchester, of course my Bersa is tempermental, never a problem with defense rounds)
American self defense has the most standards, more testing
HollowPoint expand, and have less chance to go through
More expansion = more efficiency in ending threat
Check testing reports and see which loads provide more expansion for your caliber
I carry Remington Golden Saber or Federal Personal Defense
(gotta find some)!
Frangible ammo typically does not penetrate because it explodes on impact
(I don’t recommend reloads, but I do know there are some out there who have a science and have produced some very good reloads)
Experiences- brass would expand, failure to load
Next, Calibers
(While holding 22)
In my opinion any caliber is lethal, and therefore any caliber is suitable for personal defense. Even this .22
Well Placed shots will always do the trick, center mass, between 3rd and 4th button on your shirt
No head shots if possible, smaller target, harder target!
But considering thick clothing, some .22’s wont penetrate through 3 or 4 layers
Summer time might be ok!
Here are some most popular pistol calibers
Tips: Accuracy, muzzle control (recoil), and of course comfortability
!!!Make sure your caliber matches your gun! You can find the caliber in manual, and most of the time, unless custom, stamped on barrel or frame!
Do not use 10mm for 9mm, 45 ACP for 45 Long Colt
Few expcetions: 38 special fits is 357, but why buy something smaller if you got a big pistol?
9mm, luger, parabellum all 9x19…Marakov 9x18 and .380 9x17
How about malfunctions?
(show snap caps!) mention: Slow! Have student fire, then clear malfunction-did they do it?
Most common malfunctions can be remedied with TRAF
Demonstration-
Most common with dirty, cheap ammo-light strikes, primer is hit but does not ignite charge, Tap-Rack-Asses-Fire
Older or dirty ammo, charge ignition delays, wait 30 seconds to see if hang fire then, T-R-A-F
Pressure too low, bullet is lodged in barrel. If shot feels different check barrel with long thin piece of anything (zip tie, or anything around) can explode!
Wrong ammo, dirty feed ramp, rack does not complete cycle- T-R-A-F
AKA Stovepipe, low pressure round, cheap ammo- T-R-A-F
BE SAFE, Use good ammo!
ALSO to help prevent malfunctions! next slide-CLEAN!
Cleaning info in manual, or online if no manual
Popular weapons more likely online!
Get kits at walmart…
BEST tip for those that don’t know :use Qtip
Bore Snake
No ammo in the same vicinity as pistol, no exceptions!
Solvents can get to ammo and render it useless, malfuntions!
After you clean its time to store!
Home safes,
Biometric Safes
w/ keys, fingerpads, combo pads
Desk safes
How many guns do you have?
Always store it in your holster on your person
Never leave a gun out when you have kids, too many accidents.
2 year olds can pull triggers!
Lets Digress to a little fun!
Time for some fun stuff
Myths
First one As mentioned BEFORE:
if you have adequate training you will know the safety techniques in drawing your weapon while loaded
Without a chambered round you
-lose valuable time in engaging a threat
-play the loaded, unloaded? game
With adequate training the sex does not matter
99% of discharges are user error, whether it be fingers in trigger guard, horseplay or cleanliness and functionality
(Very important to clean and maintain your weapon for flawless functionality)
Doesn’t Apply to Everybody
With adequate training your targeting will help you eliminate a threat quicker than someone shooting widly into arms and legs…etc
Most gun fights follow the rule of 3’s
3 seconds, 3 yards, 3 shots
(yours or thiers)
Math=3 attackers=9 seconds, 3 yards, 9 shots
If you have multiple attackers, you may be in the wrong area (don’t go where you need a gun)---if it is a concern then get a bigger magazine
(don’t go where you need a gun)
With this class and other training you and the millions of CCW holders out there will have, you realize that drawing is a last choice, and you should never go anywhere or do anything that when have the slightest doubt of safety
POINT IS- Train, train, train!
How about some hollywood myths?
Automatic weapons don’t go through vests in hollywood…not true
AK47’s will go through bulletprrof vest, they will however stop most handgun rounds(although military grade are designed to stop rifles, heavier, better material
Usually around 30rnds, canister magazines sometimes 50rnds
Watch some movies-shoot 10 rounds out of a revolver!
Suppressors only reduce about 30db, same as wearing most ear protection
Most guns used for cocking to fire feature in movies are double action, exspecially revolvers! You don’t have to cock!
Anybody else have some?
Ok, lets get back to why we are here!
Awarness is a big part of protecting yourself, get off cell phone and be aware!
Surroundings- aware of what and who is around you
Works in gun fight before- locating suspicious people
During watch whats beyond your target
And after, look for any partners of crime Asses!
Check for the exits when you are inside, and if not accessible look for cover that is available to you
Be aware if you are going into a safe area or not, avoid known unsafe areas!
(Break-Laws after break!)

Heard about this one?
Got into fight w. girl during party at gary’s house
Gary pointed rifle and asked them to leave
Came back with boyfriend after the party and assualted Gary
While driving away was shot in the back with a rifle and died
Was it self defense?
It is usually a long battle (this one was a year) but if you are in the right, have lawyer, and can prove it then you will win
Heard about this one?

Next, talk about resources for clubs, insurance
NRA is Lockton, Single Policy
USCCA- Group Policy
Umbrella- Read it! May not cover self defense
(Read Slide)
But don’t go somewhere because you carry, don’t go where you feel you need it!
Very last-everything will go blurry, dark, and happen very fast, you will most likely forget everything and that is why training is Important, muscle memory, doing without thinking. You can fantasize a defensive situation all you want but when it comes down to it you will lose all thought processing ability and only be able to do what is inherent. So train, if more classes aren't part of the budget than look at links on website, in handouts and train at home, train in the national forests or at you local gun ranges. Do it on your own, and do it at your pace. Get an air gun and practice trigger control, breath control, watch the videos and practice drawing from holster, reholstering, aiming, analyzing, at home! always remember: training safely, train to be safe!
Stupid Business owners, don’t give em your business!
