What is your gender?
Male
What is your age?
17
What is your favourite horror film? And why?
My favourite horror film is Sinister. This is because the antagonist is shown all the time and he
relates to the genre conventions because he looks really scary.
What is your favourite sub genre of horror film?
I would probably say my favourite sub genre of horror films would be a psychological or slasher.
However, I don’t have a specific favourite I just enjoy them all.
Which do you believe is the best setting for a horror film to be set in?
I like them to be set in a derelict eerie place, such as an old house which looks haunted, a church or a
graveyard. Although sometimes, a normal house can be used effectively.
What sorts of things do you like to see in horror films?
I like to see dark and derelict settings usually. Also I like to see the slasher characters/antagonists
wearing a mask or just generally looking very scary. I like to see a little blood and gore too, even if its
on the knife because it makes it interesting. As well as this, sound effects are not actually seen but I
like to hear them in horror films because they add tension and suspense which therefore put the
viewer on edge.
What are the most effective camera shots used in horror films?
I think that establishing shots of the setting are probably the most effective as it shows where the
film takes place and usually the setting is derelict and eerie. However, close up shots are also
effective because they pay close attention to fear on the characters faces. Close up shots are also
very conventional of the horror genre when showing fear.
What are your views on sound within horror films?
Sound is really good in horror films as I’ve said above. This is because it is used to create tension. As
well as this, diegetic sound is also used within most horror scenes, especially because of the dialogue
of characters voices being diegetic sound which is used throughout. Without this dialogue from the
characters within films there wouldn’t be any speaking and therefore the film would be awful as the
plot wouldn’t really make any sense to the viewer.
What sorts of things encourage you to go and watch a horror film at the cinema?
If the trailer is good, I usually opt to watch it at cinema. The trailer has to consist of the best parts
within the movie in order for it to look interesting. Also it has to have fast-pace cutting so that the
storyline adds tension and suspense and therefore urges me to want to watch the film. Along with
this, good sound effects must be used, such as screaming which is conventional to the horror genre.
Text on screen is also conventional of trailers and it is used to inform the viewer which is used to
draw them in and make them want to watch the film.
2. Why are horror films your favourite genre of film to watch?
I like to see a little bit of blood and gore. Also I find it quite amusing and tension grabbing when the
antagonist is chasing the protagonist (which usually occurs at some stage in all horror films). Also I
find horror films interesting, especially the psychological ones as usually the plot is extremely
grasping.
Do you like to see blood and gore within horror films?
Yes!
