Season of Art
The sociology department at the University of
London recently presented several displays of
artwork. Paolo Cardullo, a fellow at the university’s
Centre for Urban and Community Research, has
displayed his film Southall Broadway - Hands at
Work around the world. The film, meant to be
screened on a wall and viewed by people as they
pass by, was first shown at the Glimpses Festival in
Delhi, India, and has since been exhibited in
Thailand and online. It takes as its subject the
social lives of people living in Southall Broadway,
home of London’s “Little Delhi” neighborhood.

Meanwhile, the school’s Methods Lab, which
seeks to breathe new life into social research, is
displaying an exhibition called “Conversations
with Jean Mohr and Edward Said in Palestine.”
Jean Mohr took his iconic photographs of
Palestine in the 1980s for the United Nations, at
the urging of Edward Said. Because the UN did not
allow Mohr to add text other than place names to
the pictures, Edward Said later wrote commentary
for the photos in a book authored by the two men.
Now, for the first time, the photographs and
commentary are being exhibited together at the
university.
