1. BROADWAY FLUSHING
HOMEOWNERS’ ASSOCIATION
NEWSLETTER
At our May 15th membership meeting, a memorial
tribute was held for Marjorie and Nick Ferrigno,
founding members of BFHA. Family members, elected
officials, community and civic leaders, members of the
Association, and friends all gathered to share
memories and celebrate the lives of our dear and
devoted friends. A proclamation from Council Member
Paul Vallone for Nick and Marjorie was presented to
their family members. The tribute was followed by the
annual Garden Awards, which is hosted by Vice
President Maria Becce. This year 10 homeowners
received certificates for their beautiful gardens.
A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT
As the newly elected President of the Broadway-Flushing Homeowners Association, I’d
like to take a moment and thank everyone for the confidence entrusted in me. We’ve
been busy since day one making sure everyone makes the most of the summer in our
beautiful neighborhood. We have joined with the Bowne Park Civic Association to
present a free rock concert in Bowne Park on June 22nd
. We have also attended the
Community Board 7 meeting to express our opposition to the Mayor’s plan to legalize
basement apartments, which would create an incredible strain on parking and water,
sewer and sanitation services, not to mention creating a denser area that goes completely
against the open suburban feel we all know and enjoy in our beautiful neighborhood. I’d
like to remind everyone to be as active in the Association as their time will allow. That
includes volunteering to be a Block Captain, attending our meetings, donating to our
Legal and Defense Fund and at a minimum bringing to our attention any illegal
alterations or improper building projects.
The best way for us to protect our neighborhood is through swift interaction with the
Department of Buildings. We can only do that when you inform us as soon as you see
something going on. Enjoy the summer and I hope to see you all at our general
membership meeting in the fall. Until then, please check out the Association’s website
(www.BFHAssoc.Org) regularly to contact us and for the most up to date information for
all things going on in Broadway-Flushing.

COMMUNITY BOARD 7 OPPOSES
LEGALIZED BASEMENT
APARTMENTS
Mayor Bill de Blasio has been focusing
on his campaign theme of creating
200,000 affordable housing units in
NYC within the next 10 years. To save
on the costs of building new public
housing units, part of the Mayor’s plan
proposes to legalize basement
apartments and allow housing in
garages of privately owned homes. The
proposal is being presented at
Community Boards throughout NYC.
Community Board 7, which represents
Flushing, Whitestone, College Point
and Bay Terrace, was unanimous in
opposing the idea, stating concerns for
fire safety hazards and violation of
neighborhoods’ zoning laws. A letter
was sent to the Mayor’s office voicing
the community’s strong opposition to
the idea.

HURRICANE PREPAREDNESS
NYC hurricane season has been extended from
June through November 1. Although the National
Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration
predicts an average hurricane season, rising sea
levels have the potential of increasing the
destructiveness of a storm. The NYC Office of
Emergency Management urges everyone to
know their evacuation zones and to be prepared
in the event of an emergency. For more
