Preparation Tips
Prior To A CAT Scan
Computed axial tomography scan is commonly
referred to as CT or CAT scan and it is a painless
procedure. This produces images of a three
dimensional picture of the interior structure of
the body which will be the reference of
physicians for medical procedures should there
will be any normal or abnormal
structures.Patients might be required to have
iodine containing contrast for specific test or
body location. This article will discuss about the
preparation that a patient need to do prior the
procedure.
If contrast material will be used, patients will be
asked to avoid food and water for seven hours
before the examination. The material will either
be injected intravenously, by enema, or through
oral administration. This will help increase the
distinction of different organs or various body
areas. The radiology staff has to inform the
physician if the patients have history with the
contrasting materials which is the iodine.
Clothing is also specified. Metallic materials and
jewelry will be prohibited for it can interfere
with the clearness of the produced images.
The machine looks like a large donut where in
the client will be placed on a table and will be
slipped into the center hole of it. X-ray images
will then be taken by the donut like machine. It
would usually take thirty minutes to a little over
an hour. Expect that it will be longer if the
physician or the radiologist will do some tests
such as biopsies. The client will then be asked to
keep quiet, to remain still or to minimize their
movements for it could affect or alter the
results. The radiologist will instruct them on
when to hold their breath if the chest or the
abdomen will be scanned. Should there will be
any problems; the technician must immediately
be informed. There is an intercom system and
the patient is directly observed through the
window by the technician to ensure their
safety.
Diagnosis of doctors of many diseases has
greatly improved due to the advancements in
medical technology particularly with CT scans. It
has continued to evolved for more better
quality of images and for patient’s safety. The
other versions of the CT scans which are the
spiral and helical reduce the patient’s x-ray dose
for it is faster than the usual scanner. However,
the cost is also greater because of the
reconstruction of the dimension of the image.
To assess accurately some body organs such as
lungs for inflammation or scarring, the high
resolution ones are used. For noninvasive
imaging, CT angiography is the new technique
to view the coronary arteries.
The result of the scan will b einterpreted by a
radiologist. The doctor will base on the
diagnostic imaging procedure the diagnosis and
other procedures that need to be done.
Keeping Your Health

care providers diagnose and detect
abnormalities in the human body. This post
talks about the basic questions that most
people ask about it.
Does it cause pain?
No. The procedure is painless and non-invasive.
When is it often prescribed?
This diagnostic method is prescribed for the
following reasons:
1. To gain cross-sectional views of the
human anatomy.
2. To identify abnormalities in the
internal structures.
3. To aid and assist other procedures
like surgery, biopsies, and drains.
4. To provide baseline data needed for
medical diagnosis.
5. To guide health care providers in the
placement of instruments and other
things for treatment.
How does it provide doctors with images?
It combines various X-ray images with the aid of
the computer to give various cross-sectional
views that could not be seen through plain X-
ray alone. It may also give three-dimensional
images of internal organs and structures.
What does the machine look like?
The machine looks like a large donut-shaped
scanner. When a person is inside, the body is
scanned at different angles so that various
pictures may be produced. Each image taken is
referred to as a “slice”. The slice is recorded on
film and is later referred to as a tomogram.
What are the usual parts visualized?
Usually, this diagnostic procedure is done on:
1. The head for injuries like skull
fractures, blood clots, and tumors.
2. The spine for a viewing of the
vertebral column and spinal cord.
3. Other bones for evaluation of bone
density. This is common in osteoporosis clients.
4. The chest for visualization of cysts,
infections, and tumors.
5. The abdomen to get a clear look at
the liver, stomach, pancreas, spleen,
gallbladder, aorta, kidneys, uterus, and
ovaries.
Is contrast material necessary?
Contrast material or dyes are sometimes used
to enhance the scanning. For example, it may
be added to the spinal fluid so that a better
image of the spine, spinal cord, and the nerves
may be seen. The dye is usually administered
via the veins.
What are the risks involved?
This is a very low-risk procedure. The most
adverse reaction is hypersensitivity to the
intravenous contrast material. Clients are often
asked if they are allergic to seafood since the
dyes are iodine-based. Pregnant women in their
first trimester of pregnancy are also not advised

to have scans due to the danger of radiation on
the fetus.
What preparations are needed?
Food and fluids are restricted several hours
before the scanning. Physical exams and
history-taking is also done. All metallic objects
and certain pieces of clothing should be
removed so that the clarity of the diagnostic
imagingmay be good.
Learn How CAT scan
Works
There are many medical conditions that cannot
be diagnosed by the typical physical
examination. Bone and tissue problems are
hard to treat if the tests done are not accurate.
With the advances in technology particularly in
medicine, there is now an equipment such as
the CAT scan which can clearly view the insides
of the human body. The doctors can now
properly diagnose and treat their patients who
will then have higher chances of recovery.
Computerized Axial Tomography, better known
as CAT scan, uses X-ray and computer systems
to see what is inside the body by taking pictures
from different angles. This is a noninvasive test
that helps the physicians in diagnosing and
treating illnesses. It will take photos of the
bones, tissues, muscles, internal organs, and
blood vessels. Even the small irregularities in
the body system can be detected. The images
will then be viewed through the computer and
can be printed so that it can used as future
reference.
The CT technology has existed since 1972. It
was invented by Allan Cormack and Godfrey
Hounsfield. Because of the usefulness of their
invention, they were both recognized and won
a Nobel Prize. It only became popular in the
United States in the 1980s.
During a CT test. The patient will be asked to lie
down on a long table. It will then be pushed
inside a tube where the test will be performed.
An X-ray instrument inside the tube will take
the images. The adults are the most common
patients who undergo this kind of test. They
are mostly prescribed to do it to check for any
vascular damages like stroke, aneurysms and
embolism. Spinal problems and other bone
conditions can also be identified. The extent of
the damage and even the internal bleeding can
be established as well.
To prepare for the scan, you will be asked to
refrain from taking in any food for several hours
prior to your scheduled procedure. This will aid
for better viewing since there will be lesser
foreign materials inside the body. A contrasting
solution might be used on you. Make sure that
you do not have any allergies. Inform your
doctor if you are allergic to certain foods and
medications. If you suspect that you are
pregnant or if you are really pregnant, it is
important that you tell your doctor about it.
This can be harmful for the fetus if the
procedure is not done properly.
You can be exposed to radiation due to the
exposure to CAT scan and other digital imaging.
That is why, it is essential to inform your
physician if you are pregnant or suspecting to
be one. The dyes used as the contrasting
solution can bring allergic reaction. It is ideal to
determine if you have previous allergy
experience with shellfish and iodine.
