2. Moodle in Panamanian Higher
Education
Moodle (Modular Object-Oriented Dynamic
Learning Environment) is a free open-source
learning management system or e-Learning
platform, that serves educators and learners
across the globe. Moodle was developed in 2002
by Martin Dougiamas to help educators create
online courses with a focus on interaction and
collaborative construction of content
3. In Panama, Moodle was used for first time in 2000,
it was a project created by Universidad
Tecnologica de Panama.
They had this initiative in order to change the way
of learning allowing people to get the opportunity
to study using a virtual platform.
They designed a virtual program called Aulanet .
In 2010, a group of teachers designed and
developed a project called MLEA( Mobile Learning
Environment Adapter) to use Moodle in android
based devices.
4. Role of Moodle in Panamanian Higher Education
Its main role is to change the way of teaching
and learning process opening the opportunity to
have access to the knowledge in a different
way.
Using this kind of modality of learning the
participant should have a degree of
responsibility because he/she is the direct
responsible of his/her own progress.
5. Due to the impact of using Moodle from its
creation here in Panama, different higher
education institutions have been developing
different courses using this educational
virtual platform changing the traditional way
of acquiring knowledge.
6. CRU BOCAS DEL TORO
For instance, in 2012 the English Department at the
CRU Bocas del Toro had a Workshop Seminar about
Virtual Learning which aim was reinforce knowledge
of teachers an students in the use of Moodle
platform.
This kind of platform is also known a LMS(Learning
Management System)
The implementation of this kind of technology places
to the CRU Bocas del Toro a step ahead on higher
education in the area.
7. UDELAS UNIVERSITY
UDELAS University took the initiative to get
into Moodle Platform last year on November
2013, putting into practice a training
workshop “Use and Application of Moodle 2x
Platform for Teaching and Research”.
8. CONCLUSION
Moodle is a web application for a virtual
environment.
Panamanian higher education institutions
are putting into practice the use of Moodle
platform in the teaching of different
courses.
