2. Currently the largest trade union in the United
Kingdom is called Unite. It has been formed by
the merger of some of the largest unions in the
country including the Transport and General
Workers Union, Amicus, United Steelworkers,
and the Amalgamated Engineering and
Electrical Union (AEEU).
3. The Transpor t and General Workers Union
(T&G) was the largest union in the United
Kingdom and in 1977 it was the first union to
have over two million members.
4. Amicus was the union which was formed in
2001 with the merger of Manufacturing
Science and Finance, the Amalgamated
Engineering and Electrical Union (AEEU) and
two smaller unions-a finance sector workers
union, and the Graphical, Paper and Media
Union (GPMU).
5. GMB is a general trade union in the United
Kingdom, and has more than 617,000
members. Its members are drawn from many
sectors, with particular strength amongst
manual workers in local government including
schools, health care and the ambulance
service, security, retail, distribution and the
utilities.
6. UNISON is the second largest trade union in the
United Kingdom with over 1.3 million members.
The union was formed in 1993 when three
public sector trade unions, the National and
Local Government Officers Association
(NALGO), the National Union of Public
Employees (NUPE) and the Confederation of
Health Service Employees (COHSE) merged.
