2. MY TRAILER
• I USED MY RESEARCH OF SIMILAR HORROR TRAILERS TO HELP SHAPE MY OWN TRAILER
. At first I looked at horror films in
general and then specifically
psychological and one thing I noticed
which was the same across all genres is
that it tends to have a male monster and
a female victim.
. So I used this convention found it real
media products in my trailer by having a
female victim and a male villain.
3. PSYCHOLOGICAL
• I CHOSE TO MAKE A PSYCHOLOGICAL TRAILER
• PSYCHOLOGICAL FILMS HAVE ACTUALLY BECOME A SUB-GENRE OF HORROR DUE TO BEING SO
POPULAR WITH AUDIENCES
• BELOW ARE FEW EXAMPLE OF REAL PRODUCTS I RESEARCHED
4. • CHARACTER FEARS
• GUILT
• BELIEFS
• EMOTIONAL
INSTABILITY
• SUPERNATURAL
I used these conventions I learned from
real products during the construction of
the my own trailer
These conventions can be seen in my plot
which I used emotional instability of the
father to brings fear to my main character
and create guilt to the mother.
The conventions of this genre relies on aspects like. . .
5. FORMS
• COMMON FORMS FOUND IN REAL HORROR FILMS ARE STORIES ON THE MORE DANGEROUS AND SCARY
SIDE OF HUMAN NATURE AS WELL AS THE DARKER MORE EXTREME SIDE OF LIFE.
. Revenge
. Haunting
. Demons and Exorcisms
. Gore
. Serial Killers
. Religious Beliefs
. Ghosts
I decided to go for the theme of
revenge as I thought it created a
better storyline for the audience as it
has more emotion which I felt would
give way for a more exciting storyline
as well.
6. CHARACTERS…
• IN REAL HORROR FILMS THERE ARE CONVENTIONAL CHARACTERS AND I’VE USED AND CHALLENGED THIS TO
DEVELOP MY CHARACTERS AS WELL. . .
Real Product Characters My Product Characters
The protagonist: Usually a female role and most morally standing
they usually survive to pave the way for sequel.
The protagonist: Female and the main character who is the victim
but she survives.
The sex appeal: A promiscuous woman, often first killed The sex appeal: Here I have tried to challenge conventional
norms as there is no promiscuous woman as I wanted to steer
away from women being objectified, however I do realise that by
having a female main character and a male villain it can be seen
as her being objectified but I didn’t want it to be surrounding her
body or sexuality.
The irritating character: Due to their behaviour the viewer tends
to be happy with their killing.
The irritating character: Again I have challenged the
conventions of the typical characters as I don’t have an ‘irritating
character’ in it.
The unlikely hero: The one the audience suspects due to their
actions.
The unlikely hero: I suppose you could say I've used this
convention that the stepdad in the plot is the character that
could be suspected as it adds to making the story more exciting.
The antagonist: The villain usually revealed at the end, either
killed off or wounded to make way for sequel.
The antagonist: I’ve used this convention as I think it would be
quite hard to make a horror film without character creating the
horror and I've used real product influence to only revel my
antagonist at the end.
7. GRAPHICS. . .
• GRAPHICS ARE A KEY ASPECT THAT THE AUDIENCE CAN IDENTIFY WHAT GENRE THE FILM IS.
• THE GRAPHICS ON PSYCHOLOGICAL HORROR FILM MARKETING IS USUALLY BLACK , BLOOD RED AND WHITE I’VE FOUND THIS WHEN
RESEARCHING REAL HORROR FILM PRODUCTS AND MARKETING
This has influenced my product as I’ve
used these colours for my marketing
package in my poster and magazine cover
and for the titles in the trailer
8. CAMERA. . .
• FOR HORROR THE CAMERA IS A REALLY IMPORTANT PART OF THE STORY TELLING
• OFTEN THE GENRE OF HORROR CAN GIVE YOU THE FREEDOM TO EXPERIMENT WITH DIFFERENT AND MUCH MORE INTERESTING SHOTS
From my research of real products I’ve noticed that some off the main shots
used in horror films are extreme close ups and point of view shots
These are used to make the audience feel more involved, to build suspense,
tension and fear.
Here you can see clips from
my trailer where I have used
the conventional camera
techniques.
9. SETTING. . .
• THE CONVENTIONAL SETTING FOR A HORROR FILM TEND TO BE ISOLATED, ABANDONED SETTINGS.
• CHARACTERS ARE USUALLY ALONE AND SET DURING THE NIGHT
This is another way that I’ve challenged the norms of the horror film genre as
I've chosen to set mine in a house as I felt it makes more of an impact on the
audience as its literally close to home and I've also chosen to have a mixture of
night and day settings.
One thing I did use from my research of real products is isolating my victim as I
think that is one of the best ways to get the audience thinking and feeling the
tension as anything could happen as the killer has full control.
As you can see she's being held
inside a house as I felt it was
scarier to think of being trapped
in what looks like an everyday
home so your less likely to be
found.
10. OVERALL. . .
•OVER ALL I WOULD SAY THAT IN MY OWN HORROR FILM TRAILER I HAVE
USED, DEVELOPED AND CHALLENGED SOME OF THE TYPICAL FORMS AND
CONVENTIONS THAT COME FROM REAL HORROR FILM PRODUCTS.
