  • CAS AED Drill Proposal Christian Bonzheim
  • Purpose
    • “ Survival rates after sudden cardiac arrest decrease approximately 7% to 10% with every minute that defibrillation is delayed.”
    • (American Heart Association. Circulation 2000.)
    • An AED (Automated External Defibrillator) drill is designed for non medical personnel to practice emergency response procedures and to evaluate and improve upon the effectiveness of those procedures.

  • The Emergency Response Plan for Schools
    • This 2004 American Heart Association publication emphasized routine AED practice drills and evaluations in schools.
    • Considering the importance and effectiveness of fire drills, the need for routine practice of rescuing a sudden cardiac arrest patient, a life or death situation, is a logical conclusion.

  • Main Goals for the AED Drills
    • Raise awareness of sudden cardiac death.
    • Know when and where to grab the AED.
    • Understand how to use an AED.
  • CAS Project Plan
    • Submit detailed plan to Administration for final approval.
    • Educate Student Body
      • Further research signs and symptoms of cardiac arrest to present to students.
      • Create 5 minute instructional video to show in each class about the drill and AED locations.
      • Arrange hands-on AED demos for the students during lunch.
        • Recruit trained health professionals.
  • CAS Project Plan
    • Conduct school-wide practice AED drill.
    • Organize biannual AED drills that coincide with Michigan School AED weeks in November and February of each year.
    • Potential to expand to Clarkston Jr. High and Sashabaw Middle School.
  • Conclusion
    • For successful implementation, this project will require the assistance of other IB students.
      • This project would include Creativity in the design process and video.
      • Service in the area of educating the student body on how to act when they see someone suddenly collapse.
    • This drill is very important to the well-being of the entire Clarkston Community by helping to create the next generation of life-savers.
