  2. 2. Purpose <ul><li>“ Survival rates after sudden cardiac arrest decrease approximately 7% to 10% with every minute that defibrillation is delayed.” </li></ul><ul><li>(American Heart Association. Circulation 2000.) </li></ul><ul><li>An AED (Automated External Defibrillator) drill is designed for non medical personnel to practice emergency response procedures and to evaluate and improve upon the effectiveness of those procedures. </li></ul>

The Emergency Response Plan for Schools <ul><li>This 2004 American Heart Association publication emphasized routine AED practice drills and evaluations in schools. </li></ul><ul><li>Considering the importance and effectiveness of fire drills, the need for routine practice of rescuing a sudden cardiac arrest patient, a life or death situation, is a logical conclusion. </li></ul>

  6. 6. Main Goals for the AED Drills <ul><li>Raise awareness of sudden cardiac death. </li></ul><ul><li>Know when and where to grab the AED. </li></ul><ul><li>Understand how to use an AED. </li></ul>

CAS Project Plan <ul><li>Submit detailed plan to Administration for final approval. </li></ul><ul><li>Educate Student Body </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Further research signs and symptoms of cardiac arrest to present to students. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Create 5 minute instructional video to show in each class about the drill and AED locations. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Arrange hands-on AED demos for the students during lunch. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Recruit trained health professionals. </li></ul></ul></ul>

CAS Project Plan <ul><li>Conduct school-wide practice AED drill. </li></ul><ul><li>Organize biannual AED drills that coincide with Michigan School AED weeks in November and February of each year. </li></ul><ul><li>Potential to expand to Clarkston Jr. High and Sashabaw Middle School. </li></ul>

Conclusion <ul><li>For successful implementation, this project will require the assistance of other IB students. </li></ul><ul><ul><li>This project would include Creativity in the design process and video. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Service in the area of educating the student body on how to act when they see someone suddenly collapse. </li></ul></ul><ul><li>This drill is very important to the well-being of the entire Clarkston Community by helping to create the next generation of life-savers. </li></ul>
