Gas safety week
1. 14-20 September 2015
STAY SAFE AT HOME
Twenty three million households in United Kingdom, Isle of Man and Guernsey
use gas for heating, hot water and cooking, yet we take it for granted that our
boilers, cookers and gas fires are safe.
Just like you get your car MOT every year, you should have your gas appliances safety checked every year by a Gas Safe
registered engineer. Badly fitted and poorly serviced gas cookers, fires and boilers can put you at risk from carbon monoxide
poisoning, gas leaks, fires and explosions. Every year thousands of people across the UK are diagnosed with carbon monoxide
poisoning. It is a highly poisonous gas. You can’t see it, taste it or smell it, but it can kill quickly with no warning.
STAY GAS SAFE IN YOUR HOME:
• Only use a Gas Safe registered engineer to fit, fix and service your appliances. You can find and check an
engineer at GasSafeRegister.co.uk or call 0800 408 5500.
• Check your engineer’s Gas Safe Register ID card. Make sure they are qualified for the work you need doing. You
can find this information on the back of the card.
• Have all your gas appliances regularly serviced and safety checked every year - If you rent your home ask for
a copy of the landlord’s current gas safety record.
• Check for warning signs your appliances aren’t working correctly e.g. lazy yellow flames instead of crisp blue
ones, black marks on or around the appliance and too much condensation in the room.
• Know the six signs of carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning – headaches, dizziness, breathlessness, nausea,
collapse and loss of consciousness. Unsafe gas appliances can put you at risk of CO poisoning, gas leaks, fires and
explosions.
• Fit an audible carbon monoxide alarm. This will alert you if there is carbon monoxide in your home.
