UX is bandied about a lot these days, getting confused with design and UI and all sorts of things. Setting the facts straight of what it really means to create a user experience [hint: research]. We've got the 5whys, the 5users, and why we should be able to use all five fingers on our phone, rather than being all thumbs.

  • TIP OF THE ICEBERG
  • When are you using the app… can change your habitPhotos to lose weightTwitter to quit smoking
  • We have forever lost the fine art of sitting at a bar… doing nothing.
  • So what do I do? This is where you do researchBecause this is where people use their phones.SO WATCH THEM.
  • This is not the natural way t
  • Natural Gestures!!!Use them
  • One line to grab them. ConciseLike package design…
  • Look to package designThe app store is now as crowded as the cereal aisle
  • Crouching.
  • Go to marketLike getting chosen to be on the elementary kickball teamThis guy’s huge: GmailThis guy’s already everyone’s friend: angry birdsThis guy gets picked on cause he’s small… but no one knows he’s the best kick baller everHe needs an ‘evangelist’
  • First users are keyWho are theyHow do they find youWhat part of their life do you fit into?User Acquisition strategyEarly adoptersPartners [whose marketing you can piggy back on]First apps in app store [that didn’t totally suck]Made MILLIONSBecause they had the full force of apple’s marketing
  • Asking five people is enough to find out what’s wrongBut you won’t know what’s rightTry fixing itAsk againTry fixing itAsk againOnly the “most wrong thing” will surface at a timeDiminishing returnsWhat they don’t really care aboutWhat they can live with.
  • How many users are enough?

  • THE5WHYS
  • - Why are you having cereal?- Because I’m hungry. - Are you sure? - Well, I’m going to eat something. - Why do you want to eat something? - Actually, I just saw three ads for food on TV. - Why are you watching TV at this hour? - Well, I’m kinda lonely cause my boyfriend is out of town. - Why are you lonely without him? - Uh, well… I just moved here to live with him.
  • User Experience:- The interaction of someone with this thing you’ve made.User Experience Research:- Who is this person touching your stuff?- Why are they touching it?- Where are they touching it?- What do they get out of it?- Was it ‘nice?’- Did it actually answer their “need?” - …and do you want it to?
  • So, does our user needa nicer spoon,a better bowl, tastier cereal……or perhaps somenew friends anda local bar?
  • Are we designinga) “friend finder social app”Orb) “local food and drink deals site”
  • This is not the most natural way to interact with your touch screen!!! This is designing a desktop onto a mobile phone.
  • What is the number onedifference in how people shop inAsia vs the US?
  • But still…WHY.
  • Like trying to get picked for a kickball team in elementary school
  • FIRST: fit into their habitsTHEN: change their lives
  • SummaryWhy, Why, Why, Why, WhyWho, what where whenHow?
  • Tom Landauer and Jakob Nielsenhttp://www.useit.com/alertbox/20000319.html
  • So…For example“I need an app to send thank you cards…”Fix this! [HINT: THIS IS NOT THE SOLUTION!]
