As part of Acquire Learning’s exclusive Acquire Hero’s program, we’re supporting Queensland teenager Alyssa Azar as she attempts to become the youngest Australian ever to climb Mount Everest.
If this young lady wasn’t already an inspiration to us all, the way she has handled – and continues to handle – the devastation Nepal’s massive earthquake has had on Mount Everest this week, has us totally in awe.
The earthquake hit Nepal on the 25th April, triggering numerous avalanches down Mount Everest, where walls of snow, rock and ice hit every camp, resulting in some devastating fatalities.
We have now spoken to Alyssa and can confirm that she is safe.

We have now spoken to Alyssa and can confirm that she is safe. At the time of the earthquake, Alyssa and her team were at Base Camp
having a rest day. 20 minutes before the avalanche hit, she had gone across to her own tent and it was as she was falling asleep that she
knew something was happening. As she unzipped the front of her tent, she saw the avalanche coming toward her and knew that she needed
to focus on keeping enough space to breathe should the tent become completely covered. Fortunately, only half of her tent was buried
leaving her free to jump out as it passed and make sure everyone else was ok.
“I knew there was nowhere else to go. I had to think smart and stay safe. As soon as it was over, I jumped out to make sure everyone else was
ok. There’s no emotion; you go into reaction mode.” – Alyssa Azar
Alyssa and her team are currently making their way down the mountain where they hope to reach safety and respite at a teahouse and make
the decision as to whether or not they can continue with the climb. The team is keen to stay put until they know for sure they cannot
continue, but the chances of completing the climb are very slim at this stage.
We are absolutely thrilled to hear that Alyssa is safe and that her spirits have not been dampened. Driven by the opportunity to fulfill her life
dreams, push her personal boundaries and to be the best she can be, we are so proud of Alyssa as she holds her own throughout this
incredibly challenging time.
Our thoughts are with everyone affected by this tragedy and we wish Alyssa and her team every safety as they decide on their next steps.
You can follow her journey here.
