But, after the confidenceweeks turned to months of signing ned signing-on at the Job Centre (where I had previously worked asa careers adviser!), I began to believe that I had nothing of any value to offer my nextemployer, and this was the reason why I was still out of work.I want to encourage those of you who hhave reached the end of your tether and have startedto believe the lie that you have become unemployable. This is not true – but it can sure feellike it!Our skills – our life compass© Copyright Want2geton? Christian Career Coaching UK 2013
  2. 2. The good news is that despite all evidence to the contrary, God does have a plan and apurpose for your life that involves you using the God-given skills and abilities that He placedin you. One way to regard our innate skills is to view them as a compass – they point in thedirection that we’re called to labour.Peter Drucker1 said:‘You see, I don’t believe that God creates us with specialised abilities and personalitytypes then asks us to do things for Him that require completely different abilities andpersonalities. Why would a Creator who put together such an efficient and sensiblenatural world violate His design template when it came to man?’Sort of makes sense when you see things from that perspective doesn’t it?Born to do different thingsThe fact is that we are all made by God to be unique individuals and designed to dodifferent things. Some are born with a natural ability to create things with their hands, suchas an artist or a chef, whilst others are more suited to academia or the pursuit of scientificknowledge. In the construction of the tabernacle God told Moses how he had raised up Bezalel with thenecessary skills to make magnificent temple ornaments.Exodus 31:3 … I have filled him with the Spirit of God, with skill, ability and knowledge in allkinds of craftsThe Bible (Hebrews 13:21) makes it clear that God has given us everything we need toperform His will. If we’re able to discover where our abilities lie, then this will give us someidea about what God wants us to do for a living. An assessment of your skills will not only benefit those of you seeking life direction but alsothose who need confirmation that a desire to do something is actually fixed in reality, i.e. willyou be able to do the job?We all need to be realistic about what we’re really able to do. An assessment of our skillsmay point to a gap, which may suggest that we need to return to college to gain certainskills. On the other hand, it may suggest that we could be barking up the wrong tree andthat we might not be called to this particular vocation / profession. In this process it’simportant that we apply discernment and seek advice from trusted others.Resources to assess our skillsI have listed below some excellent resources that will give you a skills compass in yourpursuit of your life calling / career direction. Don’t forget to invite Jesus along with you onyour journey!1 Author and business man who contributed to the philosophical and practical foundations of the modern business corporation.© Copyright Want2geton?
