and corrective actions for the entire circuit or for pocket areas.
• Two-pronged approach to driving reliability reviews and “leading”
engineers to problem areas
– Reliability reviews based on yearly performance
• Per ICC, ComEd develops and reports on circuit SAIFI (frequency of outages)
i.e. where are current unfavorable trends
• ComEd develops statistics around three year average SAIFI numbers to identify
chronic unfavorable trending on any circuits
– Reliability reviews based on “pocket area” information
• ComEd has statistics and information on outages that are not “wide-spread” but
impact “pockets” of customers
• It is not uncommon to have a circuit that performs very well as a whole but does
have pockets of customers that experience chronic outages
• In addition, ComEd utilizes feedback from village administration on “pocket
area” issues – we want to hear about these so we can address them

4. System Performance Improvements
Trip saver: Fuse that will auto reset for transient faults
i.e. branch bounces off wire, fuse resets itself
and avoids sustained outage
URD cable replacement: Cable that has shown unfavorable trends of
performance and will be replaced in the same route as the old cable
Targeted Tree Trimming:
• Standard trimming – 10 foot zone in all directions around primary
conductors for 12,000-volt and below circuits
• Targeted trimming – minimize over-hang, extend beyond standard
zone above primary conductors, elimination of dead branches and
“soft-wood” species

5. System Performance Improvements
Hendrix cable: A overhead
installation of covered,
bundled primary wire that can
withstand tree branches and
small tree contact
Standard construction with bare conductors
create a “canopy for tree branches
HENDRIX construction has covered conductors and
reduces the “surface” footprint such not to provide a
canopy for branches

6. Vernon Hills – A6618
Improvements include
•Installation of HENDRIX spacer cable A overhead installation of covered, bundled
primary wire that can withstand tree branches and small tree contact. Proven to
reduce outages by 75-85%.

18. Vernon Hills – Distribution Automation
• Distribution Automation will serve approximately 4700
Vernon Hills customers (43% of the Village)
• One full-loop scheme is in service on feeders A6611/
C0923
• A second full-loop scheme will be livened by December
2011 on feeders A668/ A664
• A full loop scheme (in the engineering stage) on
feeders A666Y/ A122, will be built in 2012
