1. CAPSTONE – DACE 4TH INTAKE

Reflection on Capstone Assignment
Phew… Finally after over one year, this is coming to an end! Learnt a lot from the facilitators and of
course fellow 4th
intake DACE participants.
Overall the course with authentic Practicum and Capstone learning components provide good
foundation for professionals in the training and development (T&D) area. Also a better
understanding about the WSQ Framework and Continuing Education Training (CET) direction –
Singapore is heading to.
Whether it is based on WSQ standard, curriculum (or courseware) development is no easy task. The
whole process involves different stakeholders. – team work These stakeholders come from different
levels - operational, supervisory to managerial. – effective communication techniques (active
listening, questioning) You need to have research technique skills especially if you are involved in a
non-subject matter expert’s course development content.
Assessment
Assessment is an integral component of any courseware. Why assessment? It helps to gauge a learner
understanding of the content covered and able to apply appropriately in the post-learning period (e.g.
workplace). Normally, assessment can take place either formative or summative. Formative
assessment can be in the form of mini test or role-play mid-way of the course. Such assessment can
in bit-size content. Whereas summative assessment is normally conduct at the end of course to test
learner overall competency.
For my capstone assignment, it is to develop an assessment plan to validate learner competency to be
a make-up artist.
One challenge faced in the development phase, the subject matter expert is more proficient in
Chinese. I have to do much independent research work to translate the content into English ensuring
the assessment criteria’s validity in English.
The selected assessment (Practical Performance) may work well for experience make-up artist
seeking formal certification through Assessment-only Pathway (AOP).
From the various stakeholders’ feedback, the refinement process tried to minimize any possible gaps
that may disrupt the 4 Principles of Assessment (PoA): valid, reliability, fair and flexibility. Example,
to have a camera man to take photo (as evidence source for process and product) during assessment.
