Film Idea

 1. 1. Film Idea Tina Banko
 2. 2. Fantasy

I absolutely love the Fantasy/Adventure Genre. So naturally I’ll be making a Fantasy film. Something along the lines of Lord of the Rings, Eragon, Matrix (slight) and Doctor Who.

 3. 3. Conventions of Fantasy

There are quite a lot of traits that make a film a fantasy. The biggest contributor is magic. Others include lost mystical worlds, mythical creatures and or often a journey. Most Fantasies you’ll see or read involve a character or characters going on a journey of some sort.

My piece needs to include one of these elements to become a Fantasy. I have in fact thought of this as well with the use of Portals so it leans towards a Science Fantasy.

That said, my Fantasy could also be classed as a Dark Fantasy which is a hybrid genre of Fantasy and Horror for it has a dark figure chasing a young girl and a lot of blood. Most horror films would be classed under this Genre like “Nightmare on Elm Street”.

 4. 4. Story Idea (The Moon Blade)

A young girl is being chased by a person dressed in black. She is carrying a white katana in her hands which appears to be the object he/she (depending on actor this works either way) is after. She reaches her destination and throws the sword through a portal thus sending it through time landing in front of a modern stranger. In the end, the girl dies.

Depending of how dark it is on location, this will be filmed at night or sunset. I hope though to film this at night. As for the Stranger, we follow her through the streets of Leatherhead exercising the use of parallel editing.

 5. 5. Costume Ideas

This is the style type of dress I’m after. Long and flowing and white. The idea is to separate very easily who is the Hero and the Villain and if I’m lucky to film under a clear full moon night, she’ll glow. I’ll probably make this by hand due to the fact I have no money to buy something this elaborate.

 6. 6. Costume Ideas

Something like this: a long black cloak that would flow when they run. Now I’m still debating whether to have a hood for my villain or dark sunglasses like the Matrix.

Really easy to put together

 7. 7. Make-Up

Really easy one but the make-up will play a vital role. Such as my Heroine shall be made pasty white to emphasize pureness but by the end of the clip she’ll be covered in mud (from all the falls) and most of it faded.

The colour scheme for my villain will be quite pale as well but adding a few effects such as Dark circles under the eyes and a bit of blood splatter on the face representing a blood thirsty killer.

 8. 8. Setting Possibility 1

Behind Polseden Lacey is a beautifully creepy forest where the trees form a long tunnel. That would be the ideal location for a chase scene. And with it being winter (hopefully if its still open) there won’t be many people around to interrupt the shot.

There are two problems however with this location: 1. It might be closed before it gets dark 2. I might be wrong and there be a lot of people around to ruin the shot.

 9. 9. Setting Possibility 2

I do have a back-up should those two problems occur. Behind my house is a Common Field with a pretty good forest. That is open all the time so I could go down at night.

But like the first location, there a few problems as well: 1. While no one would come out at night, it is where the horses are allowed so the fields often have a lot of horse crap around. 2. There are houses behind the field that can be seen clearly.

 10. 10. Camera

I have thought about the different camera work as and for my idea it’ll require a lot of clever camera work. Such as if I go with Location 2, I’ll have to film at an angle that will hide the house. Another one is when the girl being chased activates the time portal…I don’t have the resources to actually create one so I’ll shoot that scene at an angle and use a hundred flash lights to give the effect that light is coming out.

My film will feature a good mixture of Static and Handheld camera work to emphasize the chase scenes then the walking scenes.

 11. 11. Dialogue

Because most of it is a chase scene, there will be little dialogue other than taunts from the Villain and the girl who’s running panting or screaming.

Title Sequence

The best idea I have for the titles is to fade in and out of a black screen with the names of the information.

 12. 12. Music and Sound

Sound- When the screen cuts to black so will all sound save a single heart beat to hopefully build tension on what’s happening. Other sounds I’d like to include would be to try and capture the sound of my sister running across the grass, dead leaves, branches and panting.

Music- I’m planning to put in music AFTER I film to see how it plays out. I have the image in my head but I’m having a bit of a tough time thinking of the perfect song to go with it. Something fast and heart racing of course but would if fit with my idea of wanting to emphasize the other sounds?

Here’s a nice song idea that fits in:

Def Con Immediate Music

Now this is a copyrighted song but if I can find something similar then I’m happy.

 13. 13. Narrative

There won’t be any narrative, as in a non-digectic voice over. Its going to be left a mystery to the audience’s imagination of what’s going to happen next. We’re stepping into the end of one story which leads into the beginning of a new one.

I want my audience to be leaning on the edge of their seats in anticipation then I be cruel and end it before we truly find out what happened. Dun, dun, dun…

 14. 14. Action and Falls

Action- If when I draw it out and it fits in my storyboard I might include a brief fight scene where the girl turns around and attacks her chaser then continues running.

Falls- I have planned two falls. 1. Where the girl trips and then rolls down a hill (of course) then 2. When the girl throws the blade through the portal, a powerful wind throws her back. Hopefully my sister doesn’t mind falling on gravel.

 15. 15. Actors

I do have my actors in place. This will involve my sister playing the Heroine. Vivian (yes the one sitting in class now) playing the Modern day girl walking through Leatherhead.

Although, I have the position open for the Villain. Ideally, someone taller than my sister (5.6”) and looks good in black and someone who wouldn’t mind coming out to the field in Leatherhead. Please let me know if you’re interested or know someone who might be interested. Only a few speaking lines.

 16. 16. Alternate Ideas

There are a few alterations to this idea I thought of making that might make production easier or cooler:

Make it slightly more horror. Like making my villain a little more hideous and the girl being killed gruesomely (like butchered alive).

The villain ends up retrieving the sword from the other end thus changing the film into a rescue rather than an escape. Or the Modern girl who picks it up turns out to be a servant of the villain thus ending tragically and leading to a completely new plot.
