Civilized vs. Uncivilized Theme: The conflict of Creating an Empire
Web Definition  Empire: a group of nations or peoples ruled over by an emperor, empress, or other powerful sovereign or government: usually a territory of greater extent than a kingdom, as the former British Empire, French Empire, Russian Empire, Byzantine Empire, or Roman Empire.
Book Definition  Empire: term suggests the ruthless exploitation of largely defenseless and technological unsophisticated peoples by the forces of a technological sophisticated group
Characteristics of …  Civilized lifestyle: Rules Confinement Strong rooted beliefs and hatred  The creation of a legacy that is passed down Class system  Small urban space The idea of the masses controlled by small group  Individual is downplayed
Characteristics of …   Uncivilized lifestyle:  Living in the open Living without shape No ultimate purpose No restrictions, rules, or codes of conduct Living of the land Moving with the seasons Connected to the earth Small family groups
Crossing each others path … When “uncivilized” and “civilized” groups cross paths in history conflict is the end result of such a crossing: Confusion because of poor understand of each other language, customs, and beliefs. Struggle to understand the other way of life that is easy offend able because of the belief in “superiority” of ones self
Driving emotions both groups feel when crossed …  Emotions that cause conflict in the creation of an empire:  Restlessness Exploration Opportunity Power Cruelty Passion Anger Loss Victory Indifference
What an Empire does …. Who created them and who’s been created by them? An Empire … Imposes stability upon different groups Created opportunities and restriction upon different groups  People either put up with it and assimilate or they go against it and rebel
The Promise ….  An Empire promises to those who can afford it …. Size Power Wealth Comforts Technology
The Creativity ….  An Empire forces people to be creative because they have more leisure time  The are not worrying where their next meal is going to come from They can focus and experiment with: Arts Painting Building Fashion Philosophy Government Models
