Remember the environment when you pack up
1. Remember the Environment When You Pack up
Despite the fact that texts, emails and social apps such as WhatsApp apparently dominate
our days, many of us are still popping down the post box or the local Post Office to send
letters. It might be that many of these are professional letters rather than personal
correspondence but the fact remains, we are still sending a lot of post.
Given the amount that is being send around the country, and indeed the world, it is
important that we take some time to consider the amount of packaging materials in the UK
uses on an annual basis. For example, when you send a letter or a parcel, do you ever
ensure that the exterior of your package is environmentally friendly? Do you specifically use
recycled envelopes or paper to protect your items? If you don’t, don’t feel bad, as very few
of us do; however, it is something that we should give more attention to.
The same applies to those of us who are
moving house. We always find ourselves in a
mad panic about obtaining suitably large
boxes to pack away all our worldly belongings.
We might scout out the local supermarket
and re-use their discarded boxes, which is
doing something for the environment.
However, many will simply go out and buy
packing materials directly from a storage
company or removals firm without giving any
consideration to whether or not these are
recycled or indeed recyclable.
Of those who do take the time to make sure that the boxes and containers they are using
are environmentally friendly, it is shocking to discover that many will then use other
materials on the box that are not recyclable. For example, overfilling a box is a sure fire way
to reduce its strength. To help combat this many will take duct tape or brown tape and sure
up the sides. While this can do the job, it does mean that non recyclable material has now
been wrapped all round your perfectly good box. To avoid having to take this action it would
be far easier, and arguably more logical, to simply not overfill the container in the first place.
Equally, it is possible to find eco friendly tape, should you have to use it at any point, so take
the time to do some research before you send your item out.
Of course, it’s not just about shipping items out, but about having them shipped in as well.
Thinking about buying products locally, rather than having them shipped from the other side
of the country, or world, will significantly reduce the amount of packaging required. Not
only that but you will be helping your local economy, and reducing carbon emissions
through van or plane transportation.
