This document describes a Smartboard math lesson using a virtual gumball machine for students in 1st and 2nd grade. It includes 4 lessons that involve identifying colors and amounts of gumballs to create addition and subtraction word problems. The lessons are designed for a Smartboard to allow visualization and engagement. It also explains how the lesson provides universal design for students with visual or physical impairments.

gumballs there are of
each color and create an
addition problem that
pertains to the amount of
gumballs


choosing how many
gumballs there are
of each color for
other students to
solve.

specific color and how
many there will be left
when a certain amount is
taken away from the
original amount to create
a subtraction problem.


Universal Design

By using Gumball Math, students with visual impairments
have the image and texts on a larger screen which may
help them with learning visually.

If students can’t speak, they will be able to write their
answer on the Smart Board for the teacher and other
students to see.

If students can’t write, they can verbalize their answer to
the teacher or other students in which either the teacher
or another student can write their answer on the Smart
Board for the teacher and other students to see.
