Hey Buddy Wins Indie Book Award ‘Finalist’ for
author’s pursuit of Buddy Holly’s continuing impact on
music and the lives of fans
Hey Buddy: In Pursuit of Buddy Holly, My New Buddy John, and
My Lost Decade of Music
By Gary W. Moore (Savas Beatie, 2011)
Hey Buddy by award-winning author Gary W. Moore was
selected as a finalist in the General Non-Fiction and
Memoir categories of the Indie Book Awards.
Hey Buddy: In Pursuit of Buddy Holly, My New Buddy John,
and My Lost Decade of Music is Gary Moore’s chronicle of
his personal journey to determine what made Holly so appealing and his music so
timeless. He interviews Buddy’s personal friends and family members, people who
were there the day of the crash, celebrities, and current-day Buddy enthusiasts.
Along the way, Moore uncovers new information about the doomed charter flight that
took off in bad weather with an inexperienced 21-year-old pilot. Himself a pilot,
Moore and an aviation crash expert formerly with the National Transportation Safety
Board recreate the short flight. Moore is calling for a team of experts to re-evaluate
the crash and plane wreckage based on claims from the owners of the plane that the
truth behind what happened that fateful night has never been told.
“I am so very grateful to the selection committee for recognizing Hey Buddy in not
just one, but two separate categories,” said Moore. “I am delighted that my journey to
learn more about the late great Buddy Holly is receiving this recognition and that
Buddy is being introduced through my book to a new generation of fans.”
The 2011 Next Generation Indie Book Awards, the largest non-profit book awards
program worldwide, are judged by leaders in the indie book publishing industry to
identify indie books that deserve to reach a wider audience. The award is given by
the Independent Book Publishing Professionals Group for the best indie books of
2011.
"We like to think of our awards program as the 'Sundance' of the book publishing
world," says Catherine Goulet, Chair of the 2011 book awards program.
Independent book publishing companies are independent of the major
conglomerates that dominate the book publishing industry. The indies include small
2. presses, larger independent publishers, university presses, e-book publishers, and
self-published authors.
According to Goulet, "Like other independent artists, many indie book publishers
face challenges that the industry giants don't experience. They typically have to work
a lot harder to get their best books into retail stores and ultimately into the hands of
readers."
"Authors and publishers who compete in the Next Generation Indie Book Awards are
serious about promoting their books," adds Goulet. "They aim to stand out from the
crowd of millions of books in print.”

others in and out of the music industry. It’s as American as apple pie and as

don’t walk, to your nearest bookstore and get two copies—one for you and another
for anyone you know who listens to music.”
