Editor's Notes
Slide 11-17:
It is variously called a Press Release, Media Release or News Release, but the purpose is the same:
You are creating an official statement issued to newspapers or other media outlets giving information on a particular matter that is newsworthy
Your target press release audience includes: assignment editors at newspapers, radio stations, television stations, or television networks.
Also include reporters that you know and have contact information on
Structural elements of a Press Release include: Headline, Dateline, Introduction, Body, End, and Media Contact information
This is not a time to be creative, simply state the facts as you know them and be sure to include: Who, What, When, Where, & Why the release is being issued.

One of the best ways to position yourself as the go-to person in your community is to create a local media list with as much contact information as possible.
Ways to do that include: fostering relationships with local reporters who empathize with crime victims
Follow local media personalities on Twitter & Facebook and ask them to follow back
Subscribe to media database provider. They can be expensive, but if you can find the resources in your budget, or if you work outside of your immediate community they are an invaluable resource. We use CisionPoint, but others include Vocus.com, Mediadatabasesolutions.com, and Gorkana.us
Create an Excel database & include as much contact information as possible
Utilize contact list when appropriate.
When you distribute the Press Release to your media contacts always be aware of the News Cycle. You want to maximize your effort by ensuring that you appropriately time your distribution.
For instance, a press release announcing a press conference should be distributed at least 24-hours in advance, while a press release announcing an event such as a fundraiser should be released at least a week ahead.
If your press release contains something that needs to be on the 5 o’clock news, you need to time your distribution appropriately
Distribution via MS Word Mail Merge Wizard is fast, efficient, and best of all FREE!

In 2004, social media barely existed; today we can’t live without it.
It represents media democracy: It is content rich, very powerful, and best of all it is free
Social media is an ever expanding world of profiles, friends, connections, concepts and potential hazards
Social Networks, especially Facebook and Twitter, have proven to be valuable tools in the recovery of missing children.
I like to look at social media, but particularly Facebook & Twitter as the Milk Carton Project of the 21st Century.
Think local. Remember that despite the intense national coverage some cases receive, kidnapping is a local issue
Most children who are kidnapped are taken by a non-custodial parent or someone known to the family
Even in stereotypical stranger abductions, the child is usually located close to home.
