CrossMark is a service launched by CrossRef in April 2012. My part of today’s presentation will explain what CrossMark is and it’s two main functions: providing assurance of the current status of the work you are looking at, and providing important extra metadata for readers, no matter where they are accessing the book.
To speak about the first aspect of CrossMark, many things can happen to content after it has been published. It can be corrected, enhanced, retracted or even withdrawn, and of course it’s the publisher’s responsibility to apply these corrections and updates to the literature that they publish – they have a role in providing ongoing maintenance and stewardship of content and also the dissemination of these updates. Problem of multiple versions of a book existing and how to disseminate updates to PDFs.
Simple examples from AUP and Palgrave. Here’s an example on a test paper we’ve created. If a reader clicks on the CrossMark logo they see: Current Status. And if they click on the Record tab they can see useful extra metadata on the publication (funding info through FundRef). This stays with the article wherever it is located and can be updated centrally by publishers just by updating their CrossRef DOI deposit. Had over 100,000 CrossMark deposits.
