This document discusses peripheral neuropathy and proposes a device to address it. Peripheral neuropathy causes sensory, motor and autonomic problems that impact walking, create foot drop and deformities, and increase risk of foot ulcers and infection. The proposed device would use pressure and tactile sensors in an insole, along with electrodes on nerves, to analyze pressure points and trigger muscle contractions to avoid problem areas via reflex arcs. This could help prevent deformities and ulcers while improving autonomic function depending on disease severity. Recent technologies demonstrate the feasibility of thin, in-sole pressure sensors.
