Note to Venues and Event Planners
I’m very happy to publicize your riverfront events and activities, but do need your help to gather the
event information and then keep it as thorough and correct as possible. This is a volunteer effort,
so I have limited time to play sleuth to find events or to check back to make sure that details haven’t
changed. As a result, I largely rely on information that folks send me. Please send your listings and
any updates or corrections to mplsrivercurrent@gmail.com, so that the information in the
RiverCurrent is the best it can be.

My “editorial policy” is to include events and activities that happen along the river in Minneapolis
(i.e., within the first couple of blocks back from the river’s edge) and informational events that
happen elsewhere that have topics related to the river (e.g., water quality, historic preservation,
tourism). I also occasionally will include information about riverfront commercial ventures (e.g.,
stores, restaurants) if they have something unique going on or are new to the riverfront. I want to
remind readers of the wonderful variety of businesses we have along the riverfront, but can’t
include listings about every sale or promotion.

In order to keep the RiverCurrent from becoming too long, I only list events once. Most events
are listed about 10 – 17 days in advance of the event date (unless I don’t find out about them until
the last moment). Those that might fill up or require tickets I list earlier (usually about six weeks
ahead). If there’s a specific “issue” in which you’d like me to include the listing, please let me know.
Ongoing activities are listed once a month.

The RiverCurrent is generally distributed on Wednesday and Thursday evenings, so I need any
submissions by Wednesday mid-day for inclusion that week. Feel free to send information
earlier if it’s available, as I’ll put it in queue for inclusion at the appropriate time. And, since this is a
volunteer effort, I may occasionally need to revise the distribution schedule and can’t promise that
listings sent in just before the deadline will always make it in. The RiverCurrent is important to me,
but I do occasionally have a life that intrudes!

It’s easiest for me if you just send plain text, as it often takes quite a while to pull information out of
a nicely formatted flyer format (especially if it’s a .pdf). The closer the submission is to the format I
use in the RiverCurrent, the more grateful I will be! To keep the newsletter size reasonable and
avoid spreading viruses, I don’t include photos or attachments, so I’d prefer if you didn’t send
those. Thanks!

Guest Chef: "Trout Caviar" with author Brett Laidlaw
Saturday, October 29, 12:30 and 2 pm
Join Brett Laidlaw, author of “Trout Caviar: Recipes from a Northern Forager,” for a series of
demonstrations in the Mill City Museum Baking Lab. From flavorful artisanal cheeses to the year-
round farmers markets to the first wild ramps of spring, options for eating well in Minnesota and
Wisconsin abound. Brett Laidlaw has taken advantage of these local treasures for decades, and
his book shares tips and recipes to help you embrace the gifts our northern climate provides.
Following each demonstration, “Trout Caviar” will be available for purchase and Mr. Laidlaw will be
available to sign copies. Brett Laidlaw writes the blog Trout Caviar and is the author of the novels
"Blue Bel Air" and "Three Nights in the Heart of the Earth." He divides his time between St. Paul

Washburn A Mill Tour
Saturday, November 5, 1 pm
Take an in-depth look at the historic Washburn A Mill complex and the award-winning Mill City
Museum building on this guided tour. A museum interpreter will take visitors into the building’s
many nooks and crannies, highlighting the lives of the men and women who worked there, how the
building functioned during its peak flour milling years and the many changes to the building over
time. Also covered will be how the mill ruin was converted to a museum and office building.
Although many parts of the A mill can be explored on a self-guided basis during a regular museum
visit, this is the only opportunity for a guided tour through the entire museum building, and the only
chance to see some of its non-public spaces. The tour includes admission to the museum gallery
as well as the Flour Tower show. Fee: $14 adults, $12 seniors and college students, $10 children
ages 6-17 and MHS members. Tour includes museum admission. Reservations recommended;

A workshop with Cuban Jazz pianist and MacPhail instructor Nachito Herrera on his perspective of
Rachmaninoff's Concerto #2. Herrera performed Rachmaninoff’s Concerto # 2 with the Havana
Symphony Orchestra at age 12, studied with Cuban masters Rubén González, Jorge Gomez
Labraña and Frank Fernández and served as lead pianist, arranger, and musical director for
Cubanismo. He will be joined by Manny Laureano, principal trumpet with the Minnesota Orchestra,
and MacPhail faculty member Susan Genaw. Admission $5; free for MacPhail and Minnesota

The Parker Quartet -- Impressions: Debussy, Kirchner and Beethoven
Thursday, November 3, 7:30 pm
Grammy Award-winning Parker Quartet, in partnership with The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra,
will perform two chamber music series this season in downtown Saint Paul and downtown
Minneapolis. Hailed by The New York Times as “something extraordinary,” the Parker Quartet has
rapidly distinguished itself as one of the preeminent ensembles of its generation. During the 2008-
09 and 2009-10 seasons, the Parker Quartet was the first-ever Quartet-in-Residence at the
SPCO, and during the 2009-10 season, the quartet was also the first-ever Artist-in-Residence with

Polyester Plate Lithography with Erin Maurelli

Polyester plate lithography is an inexpensive and non-toxic printmaking technique in which plates


can be made directly on a photocopier. In this class, we’ll explore the ins and outs of this exciting
process, using MCBA’s small etching press to pull an edition of prints from polyester plates. All

MCBA Star Tribune Foundation Gallery
The Book Arts Mentorship Series introduces the book arts to emerging artists whose primary
medium is in another artistic discipline, from writing to pottery, photography to filmmaking,
composing to choreography. These artists get intensive education on the traditional crafts of
bookmaking -- including letterpress printing, hand papermaking, hand bookbinding, alternative
printmaking techniques and more -- and incorporate these new explorations into their "native"
artistic discipline to create new work. This extremely unique cross-discipline artist mentorship
program is funded through the Jerome Foundation and facilitated by Minnesota Center for Book
Arts. This exhibition is the culmination of a year-long study of new artistic disciplines and one-on-
one work with master artist mentors. Series III participants are: poet Meryl DePasquale; sculptor
and textile artist Caroline Keefe; photographer Ben Lansky; video artist Amanda Lovelee;
choreographer, playwright and director Rachel Perlmeter; and photographer and printmaker Keith

It’s time to get out and learn how you can impact the revitalization of the Mississippi riverfront in
Minneapolis! The 2011 ‘Great River Outings' and events series, sponsored by Minneapolis
Riverfront Partnership, offers unique walking tours, diverse forums based on Mississippi river
issues and entries into exclusive spaces that neighbor the River. On this outing, walk to the
Mississippi River from the heart of the Old Highland neighborhood, right after their annual meeting
and potluck. Sponsored in partnership with the Old Highland Neighborhood Organization. At each
Great River Outing event, guides with experience in fields like ecology, history, community planning
and preservation will tell the ‘stories behind the story’ and give participants a greater


understanding of how the community can facilitate and support coordinated revitalization of the
Mississippi riverfront in Minneapolis. Tours and events will be held regardless of inclement
weather. Participants are strongly urged to pre- register online; however, when space allows we

McKnight Judge Reading: Pam Houston
Friday, November 5, 7 pm
Pam Houston reads from her work in a reading and reception celebrating the winners of the 2011
McKnight Artist Fellowships for Writers, Loft Awards in Creative Prose, which Pam judged.
Honored at the reading will be winners John Colburn, Jessica Roeder, Ethan Rutherford and
Dominic Saucedo. Also honored will be Heather Bouwman, winner of the Loft Award in Children's
Literature, selected by Arthur Levine. Pam Houston is the author of the short story collections
Cowboys Are My Weakness, which won the 1993 Western States Book Award, and Waltzing the
Cat, which won the Willa Award for Contemporary Fiction. Her novel, Sighthound, was published
by W.W. Norton as was a collection of essays, A Little More About Me. Houston has edited a
collection of fiction, nonfiction, and poetry for Ecco Press called Women on Hunting. Her new
novel, Contents May Have Shifted, will be published by W.W. Norton in early 2012. She is the
director of Creative Writing at U.C. Davis and divides her time between California and Colorado,
where she lives at 9,000 feet above sea level near the headwaters of the Rio Grande. Literary

Novel-Writing Conference

The conference features Pam Houston as keynote speaker and covers four tracks of interest to
novel-writers: Getting Started, The Writing Craft, Genre Fiction and Publication. Sessions are

Mississippi River Trail Community Engagement Meeting

Learn how your community’s businesses and residents can participate in and benefit from
improvements coming to the Mississippi River Trail (MRT) bicycle route. The Mississippi River
Trail (MRT) is an exciting bicycle route that follows America’s premier river, from its headwaters in
Itasca State Park to the Gulf of Mexico, offering a unique north-south transect of the United States
to adventurous bicyclists. Although the majority of the MRT is routed on relatively low-use roads
and road shoulders, imbedded throughout are significant off-road trail opportunities to delight
almost any bicyclist. The goals of this meeting are to:
Provide a progress update and lay out plans for future MRT improvements within Minnesota;
Demonstrate ways to realize the MRT’s potential to attract new visitors and generate local
economic activity;
Assess community support for a series of “MRT Discovery Rides” in the Spring (2012) for
each of the six segments of the river;
Invite additional considerations for local bicyclists and long-distance travelers, and;
Describe attributes and consider/identify/select the six Hub Cities, additional Host Cities and
two Gateway Cities.
Business owners, convention and visitors bureaus (CVBs) and tourism industry representatives,
chamber of commerce members, local public officials, community leaders, public health providers,
bicycle advocates, Great River Road devotees and just about anyone curious about this great new
tourism attraction happening “right here in River City!” are invited. Six cities will directly benefit
from consultation with tourism marketing expert Steve Markuson (former Director of Explore MN
Tourism) and planning assistance from the Minnesota Bicycle Alliance to make each community
more “bicycle friendly.” Limited funding is also available for six MRT Discovery Rides in the spring
of 2012. Finally, funding to erect permanent community information kiosks that feature the MRT
and other local points of interest has been secured for the six MRT Hub Cities. More Mississippi

The Visitor Center at Upper St. Anthony Falls Lock and Dam, operated by the U.S. Army Corps of
Engineers, St. Paul District, offers tours of their facility. The tour information will consist of the
history of Upper St. Anthony Falls, navigation on the Mississippi and the operation of the lock
structure. Tours will take place in the visitor center, and a visitor safety and security briefing will be
provided to each group before they enter the facility. A maximum of 30 people allowed for each

Check out a free, fun Mighty Mississippi Discovery Backpack at three Metro river parks. The
backpacks include everything needed to explore the park and the Mississippi River including
activity cards, binoculars, magnifying lenses, bird calls, easy-to-use nature guides and more!
Discovery Backpacks are great for families, friends and individuals. Scouts and other groups can
check out the special “Group Pack” which includes additional activities and supplies to help groups
of 10-20 people have fun and learn while exploring along the Mississippi River. Check-out a Mighty

The Guthrie Theater now offers an online virtual tour, offering a new way to explore the acclaimed

As rain barrels, composting, native plants, raingardens and other eco-friendly landscaping
practices have grown in popularity, so have the number of websites offering information on them. In
fact, there are now so many online resources it can be difficult to wade through them all to find what
you need, when you need it. This is where the new Friends of the Mississippi River “Landscape for


the river” webpage comes in. This resource offers selective listings of the most-requested local
