Two photographers, Edward Watson and Ansel Adams, led a campaign in California to restore photography to its artistic merits by focusing on the beauty found in nature, especially the outdoors around Carmel and Yosemite Valley. The construction of the Los Angeles Aqueduct between 1905 to 1913 brought water to Los Angeles from the Owens Valley, irrigating the San Fernando Valley and making LA the most productive farm region in America. In 1848, carpenter James Marshall discovered gold near Sutter's sawmill while building a millrace in Coloma, California, triggering the California Gold Rush.
