Name:
Short Story Self-Evaluation Checklist
Directions: Read through your story and check off the boxes for the criteria you have met. At the
end, name one thing you need to work on to improve the story.
Revising:
 There is a creative title.
 The story has a beginning, middle, and end.
 The exposition introduces the characters, the setting, and the conflict.
 The introduction is an attention “grabber.”
 The characters are realistic—description and dialogue are both used appropriately
 The setting is described so it’s easy to picture and explains when & where the story takes
place.
 The rising action builds to the climax and includes attempts to solve the problem with
obstacles.
 The climax of the story is a turning point for the character so that the problem can now be
solved.
 The falling action and the resolution tie up loose ends and give a solution to the problem.
 The story has a unique voice that reflects the characters, mood, and conflict.
Proofreading/Editing:
 Every paragraph is indented.
 All grammar is correct, including commas.
 Complete sentences are used throughout the entire story.
 All words are spelled correctly.
 Capitalization is used correctly. (The word “I” is always capitalized when used alone.)
 Dialogue is paragraphed and punctuated correctly. (Start a new paragraph each time a
different character speaks; commas and quotation marks are in the right place).
 Is the story 2-4 pages, using Times New Roman, size 12 font (The title can be a little
bigger)
Notes:
 One thing I need to work on is: ___________________________________________
